This hands-on STEM kit helps students build a smart drip irrigation model while learning about automated agriculture, water conservation and climate action. It combines environmental sensors with a micro:bit or UNIHIKER K10 microcontroller to monitor soil moisture and water level, then control a pump for automatic plant watering.
The kit is designed for classroom instruction, STEM workshops and at-home learning for students aged 8 and up. Colourful, Lego-compatible BOSON modules and drag-and-drop programming make it approachable for beginners, while the included lesson plans support teacher-led activities aligned with NGSS and CSTA standards.
Included in the kit are a building block expansion board, water level sensor, soil moisture sensor, water pump, two 3-pin cables, a small plastic box, two plastic containers, building block parts pack, two adjustable watering drippers, plastic tee connector, plastic straight connector, three tubes and a scenario board. A UNIHIKER K10 or micro:bit is required and sold separately.
DFRobot provides a product wiki plus tutorials for both the UNIHIKER K10 and micro:bit, and the modular BOSON platform allows students to extend projects with other BOSON sensors and modules as their skills grow.

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- Boson
- Boson is a modular electronics system that uses plug-in cables and modules to connect sensors, buttons, displays, and controllers without much wiring. If a cable is marked for Boson, it is intended to fit that connector style and pin arrangement.
- LED
- A light-emitting diode is a small electronic component that lights up when current flows through it in the correct direction. In this kit, LEDs create the flashing effect, so polarity and correct soldering matter for the project to work.
- microcontroller
- A microcontroller is a small computer on a chip that runs your program and controls connected inputs and outputs. For this product, it is the part that reads buttons and sensors, drives the display and speaker, and communicates over Bluetooth.
- UNIHIKER
- UNIHIKER is a small programmable computer board used in education and maker projects, often connected to external sensors and modules. Compatibility matters because the cable must match the board’s connector type and pin layout.
