The Adafruit Proto Under Plate PiCowbell is a single-slot prototyping base for the Raspberry Pi Pico or Pico W. It provides a reset button, a STEMMA QT / Qwiic connector, a prototyping grid, and double-row socket headers — all with no soldering required when used with a Pico H or Pico WH.
The double-row sockets give you an extra row of pins alongside each Pico pin, so you can poke jumper wires directly in without a breadboard. The hollow socket design also allows plug-through from the back using Pico Stacking Headers. All pins are clearly labelled on the silkscreen.
Key Features
- 2×20 Double-Row Socket Headers – Pre-soldered; plug in your Pico with an extra row of sockets per pin for easy wire connections
- Reset Button – Right-angle button at the board edge for quick restarts
- STEMMA QT / Qwiic Connector – Right-angle JST SH for I2C on GPIO 4 (SDA) and GPIO 5 (SCL), with 4 extra breakout holes for re-assignment
- Prototyping Area – 3-hole connected strips in the centre (traces cuttable); duplicate hole pads next to every Pico pin for solder-jumpering
- Power Rails – Dedicated 3.3V strip and ground strip near the reset button; ground pads marked with white silkscreen
- 4 Mounting Holes – For attachment to an enclosure or underplate
- Gold-Plated Pads – For reliable soldering
- Hollow Socket Headers – Connect through the back with Pico Stacking Headers if needed
Also Consider

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- breakout
- A breakout is a small circuit board that makes a tiny or hard-to-solder component easier to connect to with standard pins. It matters because this OLED module can be wired into a microcontroller project without needing to solder directly to the display’s fine contacts.
- GPIO
- General-purpose input/output pins are microcontroller pins you can set in software to read signals, switch devices on and off, or connect to peripherals. The number of GPIO pins matters because it limits how many buttons, LEDs, sensors, and other parts you can wire directly to the board.
- Headers
- Rows of metal pins used to plug a module into a breadboard or connect it with jumper wires. Pre-soldered headers make the module easier to use straight away without needing to solder the pins yourself.
- I2C
- I2C is a two-wire communication bus used by many sensors and small modules. It matters because several I2C devices can share the same two wires, but each device needs a compatible address and your controller must support I2C.
- LiPo
- A lithium polymer rechargeable battery commonly used in portable electronics projects. It matters because LiPo batteries need correct charging circuitry and care, and this board includes hardware intended for that battery type.
- NeoPixel
- A type of addressable LED system where colour data is sent along a single digital data line from one LED or controller to the next. Compatibility matters because the timing and signal format must match for the lights or driver board to respond correctly.
- Qwiic
- Qwiic is a plug-in connector system for I2C devices that uses small 4-pin cables, so you can connect compatible sensors without soldering. It matters because your controller or adapter also needs Qwiic, or you will need a cable or breakout to wire it up.
- STEMMA
- A plug-and-cable connection system used on some maker electronics boards to make wiring simpler. If a product uses STEMMA, you need the matching cable or connector type to plug it in without soldering.
- STEMMA QT
- A small plug-in connector system for I2C boards that lets you connect compatible sensors and controllers without soldering. It matters because it can make wiring faster and less error-prone, especially when adding several small modules to a project.
