The Adafruit MiniBoost 5V @ 1A is a compact inductor-based boost converter that delivers up to 1 A of regulated 5 V output from a 2–5 V input. About the size of a linear regulator, it's perfect for powering microcontrollers, displays, and peripherals from a single LiPo battery or a pair of alkaline cells.
Built around the TI TPS61023 with integrated dual 3 A MOSFET switches, this board achieves approximately 88% efficiency at typical loads and includes a true-disconnect enable pin that completely de-powers the output when pulled low. The output is set to 5.2 V to compensate for cable voltage drop. For lower-current needs, see the MiniBoost 100 mA Charge Pump.
Key Features
- 5.2 V Regulated Output – Slightly above 5 V to account for cable drop
- Up to 1 A Output – From a 3.5 V input (LiPo nominal); see output table below
- Wide Input Range – 2–5 V DC (boots from as low as 2 V)
- High Efficiency – ~88% at loads up to 500 mA from 3.7 V input
- True Disconnect Enable – Pull EN low to completely de-power the output
- Ultra-Compact – Similar footprint to a TO-220 linear regulator
- Pre-Assembled – Fully soldered breakout board, just add header
Output Current by Input Voltage
- 2.0 V in → 300 mA max at 5 V (minimum boot voltage)
- 2.5 V in → 500 mA max (two NiMH cells)
- 3.0 V in → 800 mA max (two alkalines or near-flat LiPo)
- 3.5 V in → 1100 mA max (LiPo nominal voltage)
- 4.0 V in → 1400 mA max (three NiMH or fresh LiPo)
Efficiency at 3.7 V Input
- 100 mA out → 160 mA in (88%)
- 250 mA out → 400 mA in (88%)
- 500 mA out → 800 mA in (88%)
- 1000 mA out → 1800 mA in (78%)

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- boost converter
- A boost converter is a switching power circuit that raises a lower input voltage to a higher output voltage. It is used when a device needs more voltage than its power source provides, for example running a 5 V sensor from a 3.3 V supply.
- breakout
- A breakout board carries a small or fine-pitched component and brings its connections out to standard, breadboard- and header-friendly pins. Describing a part as a breakout means it can be wired into a project without soldering directly to the component's tiny contacts.
- DC
- DC means direct current, where electricity flows in one constant direction, as supplied by batteries, USB ports and many plug-pack power supplies. When a product specifies DC, it runs from a DC supply rather than mains AC, so you need to provide the correct voltage and polarity.
- LiPo
- A LiPo (lithium polymer) battery is a rechargeable lithium battery widely used in portable projects because it is light and compact. LiPo cells need correct charging circuitry and careful handling to stay safe, so equipment that supports LiPo generally includes charging or protection hardware suited to that battery type.
