The Adafruit DotStar APA102 Cool White LED Strip (144 LED/m, ~6000K) uses the same integrated DotStar driver as the RGB strips but with dedicated cool white phosphor LEDs. The result is an incredibly bright, consistent white light — far superior to mixing RGB to approximate white.

Controlled via a 2-wire SPI interface at up to 32 MHz, each LED features 24-bit PWM brightness control at 20 KHz for smooth, flicker-free dimming. No timing-critical code is required, making these strips compatible with any microcontroller or microprocessor. This is a full 1-metre length of the ultra-dense 144 LED/m strip on white flex PCB.

Key Features

  • Cool White ~6000K – Dedicated white phosphor LEDs for true, consistent white light
  • SPI Interface – 2-wire (clock + data) protocol works with any processor speed
  • 24-Bit Brightness Control – High-frequency 20 KHz PWM for smooth, flicker-free dimming
  • Up to 32 MHz Data Rate – Hardware SPI supported but not required
  • Ultra-Dense 144 LED/m – Seamless light output with no visible gaps
  • Weatherproof Sheathing – Flexible PCB with protective coating
  • Cuttable – Cut lines every 1 LED, solder to 0.1" copper pads
  • 4-Pin JST SM Connectors – Included on each end

Also Available

Ideal For

  • Under-cabinet and task lighting
  • Architectural and display illumination
  • Photography and video lighting rigs
  • Smart home lighting with programmable dimming

Package Contents

  • 1× DotStar Cool White LED strip – 144 LED/m, ~6000K, 1 metre, white flex PCB, with JST SM connectors
Note: Sold as individual 1-metre strips. Ordering multiples will deliver separate 1-metre strips, not a continuous length.
Warning: You must use a 5V DC power supply. Do not exceed 6V or you may permanently damage the entire strip.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

LED
A light-emitting diode is a small electronic component that lights up when current flows through it in the correct direction. In this kit, LEDs create the flashing effect, so polarity and correct soldering matter for the project to work.
microcontroller
A microcontroller is a small computer on a chip that runs your program and controls connected inputs and outputs. For this product, it is the part that reads buttons and sensors, drives the display and speaker, and communicates over Bluetooth.
PCB
A printed circuit board is a rigid board with copper tracks that connect electronic parts without loose wires. For this kit, the PCBs also form the airplane shape, so they are both the circuit base and part of the finished model.
PWM
Pulse Width Modulation is a way for a digital pin to simulate variable output power by switching on and off very quickly. It matters for controlling things like LED brightness, motor speed, or servo-style signals from a microcontroller pin.
RGB
Short for red, green and blue, usually referring to an LED that can mix those three colours. It matters because controlling an RGB LED teaches how separate outputs combine to create different colours.
SPI
A fast serial communication bus often used for displays, memory cards, and sensors. It matters because SPI devices need specific pins for clock and data, plus a separate chip-select line for each device.
