This compact adapter lets you power gear with a 5.5mm / 2.1mm DC barrel socket from a USB Type C connection. It is handy for projects, development boards, and small devices that use the common centre-positive barrel jack format.

With a suitable USB PD power supply, it provides 9V DC output at up to 3A, or up to whatever the connected power adapter can supply. The reversible USB-C connector also means you can flip the adapter to suit a left-angle or right-angle cable layout.

Please note that your USB PD power supply must explicitly support 9V output. If it does not, this adapter will provide 5V or some other lower voltage. This adapter is centre positive; for centre-negative devices, use a 5.5mm/2.1mm DC barrel polarity reversing cable adapter on the end.

Specifications:

  • USB connector: USB Type C 3.1
  • DC barrel size: 5.5mm / 2.1mm
  • Output voltage: 9V DC
  • Output current: up to 3A (or whatever the power adapter can do)
  • Polarity: center positive

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

center positive
Center positive describes the polarity of a barrel-style DC power plug, where the centre pin is positive and the outer sleeve is negative. Using a power supply with the wrong polarity can stop the board from working or damage it.
DC
DC means direct current, where electricity flows in one constant direction, as supplied by batteries, USB ports and many plug-pack power supplies. When a product specifies DC, it runs from a DC supply rather than mains AC, so you need to provide the correct voltage and polarity.
USB PD power supply
A charger or power adaptor that uses USB Power Delivery to negotiate higher voltages and currents over USB-C. It matters because the device and cable must support the required PD power level, otherwise a board, soldering iron, laptop, or other product may charge slowly or not run at all.
USB-C
USB-C is a small, reversible USB connector that can carry power, data and, on some devices, video over a single cable. The same connector can range from charging only to high-speed data, so the functions a given port actually supports vary.
