This ultrasonic time-of-flight (ToF) material detection sensor identifies surface materials by analysing the difference in ultrasonic echo energy reflected from various surfaces. It can distinguish between hard and soft materials at short range (2–10 cm), outputting results via UART or digital IO (high/low).
Designed for integration into robotic cleaners and automated systems, the sensor enables intelligent floor-type detection so devices can automatically adjust cleaning strategies based on the surface material. Its miniature size (just 1 g) and ultra-low power consumption make it easy to embed in compact devices.

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- ESD protection
- ESD protection helps protect electronics from damage caused by static electricity discharges. It is useful on development boards because cables, sensors and modules are often plugged and unplugged during prototyping.
- IP54
- An ingress protection rating meaning the enclosure has limited dust protection and is protected against water splashes from any direction. This matters because it gives a practical indication of how well the product may handle dusty or damp installations.
- UART
- UART is a simple serial connection that sends data over separate transmit and receive wires, often labelled TX and RX. It matters because this module is designed to replace a wired UART cable with a wireless link while keeping the same serial data format.
