TIMI-96 is a breadboard-compatible display development module designed to make electronics testing, prototyping and education quicker and neater. It can be used stand-alone, driven by a host, tethered to a PC, or built into development projects.
The module combines a 0.96” TFT LCD with a PIXXI-28 graphics processor from 4D Labs, wrapped in a metal frame so the display can be viewed from a range of angles. Its 160×80 RGB display supports 65K vivid colours and is well suited to simulated readouts, meters and simple user interfaces.
Connection is via the BBM MatesBus: two rows of 5 pins on a breadboard-friendly 0.1” (2.54mm) pitch, spaced 0.3” (7.62mm) apart. The main interface is a 3.3V level asynchronous serial UART, with three GPIO available for digital or analogue input, digital output, controller I2C communication or PWM audio output.
TIMI-96 can be oriented in Portrait, Landscape, Portrait Reversed or Landscape Reversed modes. Its natural upside-down ‘T’ layout is designed to sit at the bottom of a breadboard, close to the user, while leaving the upper breadboard area free for parts and wiring. Documentation includes the TIMI-96 Datasheet, Programmer Datasheet and Mates Studio.
Features:
- Breadboard compatible: MatesBus pinout plugs directly into breadboards, adapters or development boards.
- Flexible operation: Usable as a stand-alone controller, host-driven peripheral or tethered test instrument.

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- baud
- Baud is the signalling rate of a serial connection, often used as the speed setting for UART communication. Matching the baud rate matters because both connected devices must use the same setting for readable data.
- Flash memory
- Non-volatile memory that keeps stored data even when power is removed. In this sensor, it matters because enrolled fingerprint templates can remain saved after the project is turned off.
- GPIO
- General-purpose input/output pins are microcontroller pins you can set in software to read signals, switch devices on and off, or connect to peripherals. The number of GPIO pins matters because it limits how many buttons, LEDs, sensors, and other parts you can wire directly to the board.
- Headers
- Rows of metal pins used to plug a module into a breadboard or connect it with jumper wires. Pre-soldered headers make the module easier to use straight away without needing to solder the pins yourself.
- I2C
- I2C is a two-wire communication bus used by many sensors and small modules. It matters because several I2C devices can share the same two wires, but each device needs a compatible address and your controller must support I2C.
- LCD
- LCD stands for liquid crystal display, a screen technology that uses a backlight and liquid crystals to show images or text. It matters because LCD modules usually need a display driver and enough controller pins or a bus interface to send image data.
- PCB
- A printed circuit board is a rigid board with copper tracks that connect electronic parts without loose wires. For this kit, the PCBs also form the airplane shape, so they are both the circuit base and part of the finished model.
- PWM
- Pulse Width Modulation is a way for a digital pin to simulate variable output power by switching on and off very quickly. It matters for controlling things like LED brightness, motor speed, or servo-style signals from a microcontroller pin.
- RGB
- Short for red, green and blue, usually referring to an LED that can mix those three colours. It matters because controlling an RGB LED teaches how separate outputs combine to create different colours.
- SRAM
- Fast temporary memory used by a processor while a program is running. More SRAM helps with projects that handle larger data buffers, networking, displays, or more complex code.
- TFT
- A thin-film transistor display is a common type of colour LCD used for graphics screens. Knowing a product is for TFTs helps you check that the driver board matches the display’s connector, resolution, backlight, and signalling method.
- UART
- UART is a simple serial connection that sends data over separate transmit and receive wires, often labelled TX and RX. It matters because this module is designed to replace a wired UART cable with a wireless link while keeping the same serial data format.
