Control up to 16 servo motors from your Raspberry Pi over I2C with the SparkFun Servo pHAT. By using I2C for PWM generation, this HAT keeps all your GPIO pins free for other tasks. It also provides a serial terminal connection, so you can set up your Pi without a monitor and keyboard.

Power is supplied via a USB-C connector, which can drive the servos alone or power both the servos and the connected Raspberry Pi. The pHAT matches the Raspberry Pi Zero form factor but is also compatible with full-size Raspberry Pi boards. A Qwiic connector is included for easy I2C expansion, along with a 4-pin header for connecting to the Sphero RVR.

Key Features

  • 16 Servo Channels – Standard 3-pin headers (ground, 5V, signal) for each servo
  • I2C Control – Frees up Raspberry Pi GPIO pins
  • USB-C Power – High current delivery for multiple or larger servos
  • Serial Terminal – Set up your Pi headlessly via the USB-C connection
  • Qwiic Connector – Plug-and-play I2C expansion
  • Power Isolation Jumper – Cut the trace to separate servo and Pi power rails for heavier loads
  • Power Protection – Built-in circuits to prevent damage to power sources
  • No Soldering Required – Headers included and pre-installed

Ideal For

  • Robotics and animatronics projects
  • Pan-tilt camera mounts
  • Sphero RVR add-ons
  • Multi-servo automation and control
Note: Raspberry Pi and servo motors are sold separately. This pHAT matches the Pi Zero form factor but also works with full-size Raspberry Pi boards.

Package Contents

  • 1× SparkFun Servo pHAT (with headers pre-installed)

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

GPIO
General-purpose input/output pins are microcontroller pins you can set in software to read signals, switch devices on and off, or connect to peripherals. The number of GPIO pins matters because it limits how many buttons, LEDs, sensors, and other parts you can wire directly to the board.
Headers
Rows of metal pins used to plug a module into a breadboard or connect it with jumper wires. Pre-soldered headers make the module easier to use straight away without needing to solder the pins yourself.
I2C
I2C is a two-wire communication bus used by many sensors and small modules. It matters because several I2C devices can share the same two wires, but each device needs a compatible address and your controller must support I2C.
pHAT
A smaller add-on board format for Raspberry Pi, similar in idea to a HAT but usually not full-sized. It matters because pHAT compatibility can affect how neatly a board stacks or fits into a Raspberry Pi project.
PWM
Pulse Width Modulation is a way for a digital pin to simulate variable output power by switching on and off very quickly. It matters for controlling things like LED brightness, motor speed, or servo-style signals from a microcontroller pin.
Qwiic
Qwiic is a plug-in connector system for I2C devices that uses small 4-pin cables, so you can connect compatible sensors without soldering. It matters because your controller or adapter also needs Qwiic, or you will need a cable or breakout to wire it up.
servo
A servo is a motor with built-in position control, usually told to move to a specific angle by a control signal. It matters when you need repeatable movement, such as steering, arms, flaps, or linkages, rather than continuous spinning.
USB-C
A modern reversible USB connector used for power and data connections. On this product it matters because it can connect directly to a computer as well as to a microcontroller project.
