The SparkFun LuMini LED Ring (2 Inch) features 40 individually addressable APA102-2020 RGB LEDs in a compact ring form factor. Each LED can produce over 16 million colours, and the miniaturised 2 mm × 2 mm package allows for tight pixel density and a near-continuous ring of colour.

The ring is controlled via SPI (data + clock) through solder pads on the back of the board. Multiple rings can be daisy-chained by connecting the data/clock output of one to the input of the next. Eight detachable mounting tabs (four inside, four outside) can be used to secure the ring or broken off for more complex designs.

Key Features

  • 40× APA102-2020 LEDs – Individually addressable RGB with 16 million colours
  • 2 mm × 2 mm LED Package – High pixel density for smooth colour transitions
  • SPI Control – Separate data and clock lines for reliable communication
  • Chainable – Data/clock output pads for daisy-chaining multiple rings
  • Detachable Mounting Tabs – 8 breakaway mounting points for flexible installation
  • 5 V Operation – Powered via solder pads on the back

Specifications

  • LED Count – 40
  • LED Type – APA102-2020 (2 mm × 2 mm)
  • Ring Diameter – 2 inches (~51 mm)
  • Operating Voltage – 5 V
  • Interface – SPI (data + clock)
Tip: For larger installations, add a 4.7 µF decoupling capacitor between power and ground to prevent voltage dips when many LEDs are turned on simultaneously.

Ideal For

  • Wearable electronics and costumes
  • Status indicators and visual feedback rings
  • Art installations and decorative lighting
  • Clock and gauge displays

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

LED
A light-emitting diode (LED) is a small electronic component that emits light when current flows through it in the correct direction. Because it only conducts one way, its polarity matters, and a through-hole LED must be soldered the correct way around to light up.
RGB
Short for red, green and blue, the three primary colours of light that are mixed in varying amounts to make a wide range of colours. In electronics RGB can refer to an LED or pixel that blends these three colours, or to a colour signal or interface that carries separate red, green and blue channels.
SPI
A fast serial communication bus often used for displays, memory cards, and sensors. It matters because SPI devices need specific pins for clock and data, plus a separate chip-select line for each device.
