The SparkFun 8 Channel Level Shifter Breakout features the TXS01018E™ 8-bit, bi-directional logic level translator from Texas Instruments. This board allows you to easily shift logic between devices running at different common microcontroller voltages such as 1.8V, 3.3V and 5V. The TXS0108E can transmit data between ports at max speeds of 110Mbps (push/pull) or 1.2Mbps (open drain) so you can use a 3.3V SPI device with a 5V microcontroller like the SparkFun RedBoard Plus without sacrificing data transmission speeds.
The TXS0108E accepts a supply voltage range between 1.4V to 3.6V on Port A and 1.65V to 5.5V on Port B. This breakout routes all of the TXS01018E's pins to a pair of 0.1"-spaced plated through-hole headers for easy access with some basic soldering.
Features:
  • Bi-Directional Level-Shifting
  • Open-Drain and Push-Pull Applications
  • Max Data Rates:
    • 110 Mbps (push-pull)
    • 1.2 Mbps (open-drain)
  • Supply Voltage Range:
    • Port A: 1.4V to 3.6V
    • Port B: 1.65V to 5.5V

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

breakout
A breakout board carries a small or fine-pitched component and brings its connections out to standard, breadboard- and header-friendly pins. Describing a part as a breakout means it can be wired into a project without soldering directly to the component's tiny contacts.
Headers
Rows of connector contacts on a fixed pitch (commonly 2.54 mm) used to link a board to a breadboard, jumper wires, or another board. They come as male pin headers and female socket headers; when a module ships with pre-soldered headers it can be used straight away, whereas bare pads require soldering the pins yourself.
microcontroller
A microcontroller is a small computer on a single chip that runs a stored program and controls connected inputs and outputs such as buttons, sensors, displays and communication interfaces. In a device built around one, it is the part that executes the code and coordinates the device's behaviour.
SPI
A fast serial communication bus often used for displays, memory cards, and sensors. It matters because SPI devices need specific pins for clock and data, plus a separate chip-select line for each device.
through-hole
A mounting style where the component leads pass through holes in a circuit board and are soldered on the other side. Through-hole parts are often easier to handle and solder by hand, which is useful for classroom and hobby projects.
