The Pololu D24V50F5 is a high-efficiency step-down (buck) voltage regulator that converts input voltages up to 38V down to a fixed 5V output. With a typical maximum output current of 5A and efficiency between 85% and 95%, it far outperforms linear regulators — especially when the input-to-output voltage difference is large.
At light loads, the switching frequency automatically adjusts to maintain high efficiency, with a typical no-load quiescent current under 1 mA. The ENABLE pin can further reduce quiescent current to approximately 10–20 µA per volt on VIN for low-power sleep states.
Key Features
- Output Voltage – Fixed 5V with 4% accuracy
- Input Voltage Range – (5V + dropout voltage) to 38V
- Maximum Output Current – Typically 5A (varies with input voltage and conditions)
- Efficiency – 85% to 95% typical, with automatic frequency adjustment at light loads
- Switching Frequency – Approximately 600 kHz (drops at light loads for efficiency)
- Quiescent Current – Under 1 mA (no load); reducible via ENABLE pin
- Built-in Protection – Reverse-voltage, over-current, thermal shutdown, soft-start, and under-voltage lockout
- ENABLE Pin – Drive low (under 0.6V) to enter low-power sleep state
- Mounting – Two 0.086″ holes for #2 or M2 screws
- Pin Spacing – 0.1″ (2.54mm), compatible with breadboards and standard connectors
- Dimensions – 17.8 × 20.3 × 8.8mm (0.7″ × 0.8″ × 0.35″)
Connections
- VIN – Input voltage (4.5V to 38V; effective minimum is VOUT + dropout voltage)
- VOUT – Regulated 5V output
- GND – Ground (2 pins)
- EN – Enable pin (pulled high by default via 100 kΩ resistor; leave disconnected if not needed)

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- motor driver
- An electronic circuit that lets a low-power controller switch and control a motor that needs more current than the controller pins can safely provide. Checking motor driver support matters because pumps and motors usually cannot be connected directly to a microcontroller output.
- single-board computer
- A complete computer built onto one circuit board, usually including the processor, memory, ports, and connectors. This matters because accessories like heatsinks must match the board’s layout and mounting holes to fit properly.
