The PICAXE 8 Pin Proto Kit is a beginner-friendly kit for getting started with 8-pin PICAXE microcontrollers. It includes a handful of easy-to-solder through-hole components and a proto board, making it an ideal first project for learning microcontroller basics.

The kit includes a battery snap for power, but the board must only be driven at 4.5–5 V. A 3×AA battery pack is recommended instead of a 9 V battery to prevent damage to the board.

Warning: Do not connect a 9 V battery to this board. The proto board is rated for 4.5–5 V only. Use a 3×AA battery pack for safe operation.

Key Features

  • Beginner-Friendly – Through-hole components are easy to solder, no surface-mount work required
  • PICAXE Compatible – Designed for 8-pin PICAXE microcontrollers (sold separately)
  • Proto Board Layout – Simple PCB layout for learning and experimentation
  • Battery Powered – Runs on 4.5–5 V via the included battery snap

Ideal For

  • Beginners learning to solder and program microcontrollers
  • PICAXE microcontroller projects
  • Educational electronics workshops
Note: An 8-pin PICAXE microcontroller chip is required and sold separately.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

microcontroller
A microcontroller is a small computer on a single chip that runs a stored program and controls connected inputs and outputs such as buttons, sensors, displays and communication interfaces. In a device built around one, it is the part that executes the code and coordinates the device's behaviour.
PCB
A printed circuit board (PCB) is a board, usually rigid, with etched copper tracks that connect electronic components together without loose wiring. Components are mounted on the board and signals route between them through the copper layout.
through-hole
A mounting style where the component leads pass through holes in a circuit board and are soldered on the other side. Through-hole parts are often easier to handle and solder by hand, which is useful for classroom and hobby projects.
