A compact motor driver add-on for the Raspberry Pi Pico, based on the DRV8833 dual H-bridge. Solders directly to the back of a Pico and provides two JST-ZH connectors for micro metal gearmotors. Also includes a user button and a Qw/ST (Qwiic/STEMMA QT) connector for attaching I²C breakout boards.
Designed to use minimal pins so it can be combined with other Pico add-ons. Soldering required.
Key Features
- DRV8833 Dual H-Bridge – Drive up to two micro metal gearmotors independently
- JST-ZH Motor Connectors – Two 2-pin JST-ZH ports for motor cables
- Qw/ST Connector – Qwiic/STEMMA QT compatible I²C port for sensors and breakouts
- User Button – Multi-purpose button for triggering actions
- Compact Design – 26 × 21 × 5mm, mounts directly to the back of a Pico
Assembly
Solder the SHIM to the back of your Pico with the mounting holes aligned at the USB port end. The "PICO MOTOR SHIM" text on the board and the pin labels on the back of the Pico should face each other. Alternatively, solder to socket headers for a non-permanent connection.
Ideal For
- Small wheeled robots and balancing bots
- Motor-driven Pico projects
- Compact robotics prototyping

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- breakout
- A breakout board carries a small or fine-pitched component and brings its connections out to standard, breadboard- and header-friendly pins. Describing a part as a breakout means it can be wired into a project without soldering directly to the component's tiny contacts.
- Headers
- Rows of connector contacts on a fixed pitch (commonly 2.54 mm) used to link a board to a breadboard, jumper wires, or another board. They come as male pin headers and female socket headers; when a module ships with pre-soldered headers it can be used straight away, whereas bare pads require soldering the pins yourself.
- motor driver
- An electronic circuit that lets a low-power controller switch and control a motor that needs more current than the controller pins can safely provide. Checking motor driver support matters because pumps and motors usually cannot be connected directly to a microcontroller output.
- Qwiic
- Qwiic is a plug-in connector system for I2C devices that uses small 4-pin cables, so you can connect compatible sensors without soldering. It matters because your controller or adapter also needs Qwiic, or you will need a cable or breakout to wire it up.
- STEMMA
- A plug-and-cable connection system used on some maker electronics boards to make wiring simpler. If a product uses STEMMA, you need the matching cable or connector type to plug it in without soldering.
- STEMMA QT
- A small plug-in connector system for I2C boards that lets you connect compatible sensors and controllers without soldering. It matters because it can make wiring faster and less error-prone, especially when adding several small modules to a project.
