Maqueen Lite is a compact, pre-assembled robot for the BBC micro:bit, and the friendliest way into classroom robotics. Slot a micro:bit into the edge connector, write a few blocks in MakeCode, and it drives, follows a line, flashes its headlights and beeps. No soldering and no chassis to build.

Six kits — choose yours above:

Maqueen Lite only
The robot on its own. Choose this if your students already have micro:bits.
With micro:bit V2
Everything needed to start — the robot plus the board that runs it.
With micro:bit V2 + IR remote
Adds a handheld infrared remote, so the robot can be driven as well as programmed.
With micro:bit V2 + Gamepad
Adds the micro:Gamepad, a second micro:bit-based controller for radio-controlled driving.
With micro:bit V2 + Gamepad + IR remote
The full set, for a class that wants both ways of controlling it.
With Mechanic Loader (no micro:bit)
The robot plus the servo-driven loader bucket, for mechanisms work.

On board

  • Two all-metal micro gear motors with custom POM bearing wheels — good grip and enough torque to climb small obstacles
  • Line-following sensors for track and maze activities
  • Ambient light sensor, programmable LED headlights and a buzzer
  • Ultrasonic and I2C connectors, plus mounting holes for the Maqueen Mechanic attachments
  • 3 × AAA battery box (batteries not included)

Programs with Microsoft MakeCode blocks — the same environment schools already use for the micro:bit — so a teacher who has run a micro:bit lesson can run this one.

Suggested age: 8 and up.

In the box: assembled car body with the motors and support wheels already fitted, two drive wheels, a 3 × AAA battery box and double-sided tape. A micro:bit is included only in the kits listed above.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

Ambient light sensor
A sensor that measures the general brightness of light falling on it, similar to how a device can adjust screen brightness automatically. It matters when you want a project to react to room lighting, daylight, shadows, or covered/uncovered conditions.
I2C
I2C is a two-wire communication bus used by many sensors and small modules. It matters because several I2C devices can share the same two wires, but each device needs a compatible address and your controller must support I2C.
LED
A light-emitting diode (LED) is a small electronic component that emits light when current flows through it in the correct direction. Because it only conducts one way, its polarity matters, and a through-hole LED must be soldered the correct way around to light up.
servo
A servo is a motor with built-in position control, usually told to move to a specific angle by a control signal. It matters when you need repeatable movement, such as steering, arms, flaps, or linkages, rather than continuous spinning.
Torque
A twisting force that causes something to rotate, usually measured in newton-metres or kilogram-centimetres. It matters when choosing motors, servos, gears, and tools because higher torque is needed to lift heavier loads, turn larger wheels, or move mechanisms without stalling.
