The MC Etcher is a diamond drag bit for fine line engraving on composites, metals and glass. Instead of cutting with flutes like a normal endmill, it drags a diamond-coated, spring-loaded tip across the surface to create an etched or engraved pattern.
Important: drag engravers are not meant to rotate, so the spindle must be turned off when using the MC Etcher. Toolpaths should be generated with zero RPM, or used with the spindle left off.
This 90-degree version is better suited to very hard or anodised materials where extra penetration is useful. A 120-degree tip can produce slightly wider lines in softer materials such as fibreboard, but has less penetration in harder materials.
The bit ships in a reusable storage tube. Carbide Create, Carbide Create Pro or another 2D CAM program can be used to generate suitable contour, pocket, outline or fill toolpaths for drag engraving.
Features:
- Fine line engraving on composites, metals and glass.
- Diamond-coated, spring-loaded tip drags over the material surface to etch or engrave.
- Does not cut with flutes like a normal endmill.
- Ships in a reusable storage tube.
- 90-degree tip has better penetration in very hard or anodized materials.
- 120 deg tip provides slightly wider lines in softer materials such as fiberboard but has less penetration in harder materials.
- Use Carbide Create, or any other 2D CAM program, to generate contour toolpaths and pocket toolpaths with an RPM of zero.
- Use the Engrave toolpath in Carbide Create Pro to generate outline and fill toolpaths for drag engraving.
- Works with plastics like acrylic, plexiglass, and polycarbonate.
- Works with metals like aluminum, brass, or stainless steel.
- Works with glass, porcelain, and ceramics.
- Works with stone tile, like granite and marble.
Specifications:
- Tip: 90-degree tip
- Shank: 1/4" Shank
- Feedrate: 60 in/min
- Plungerate: 30 in/min
- Cut Depth / Compression: .015"
Tool life will vary with the material being engraved. For harder materials such as glass and stone, test the minimum toolpath density or maximum stepover that gives the finish you want to help extend bit life.
