This spring-loaded diamond drag engraver is made for fine line etching on materials such as composites, metals and glass. Instead of cutting with flutes like a normal endmill, it drags a diamond-coated tip across the surface to create an engraved pattern.

Drag engravers are not meant to rotate, so your spindle should be turned off when using the MC Etcher. For CAM setup, you can generate contour or pocket toolpaths in Carbide Create or another 2D CAM program with the RPM set to zero, or use the Engrave toolpath in Carbide Create Pro for outline and fill toolpaths.

The 120 degree tip produces slightly wider lines in softer materials such as fibreboard, though it has less penetration in harder materials than the 90 degree version. It ships in a reusable storage tube for safe handling between jobs.

Features:

  • Diamond drag engraving: Diamond-coated, spring-loaded tip creates etched or engraved patterns without cutting flutes.
  • Spindle off operation: Drag engravers are not meant to rotate, so the spindle needs to be turned off when using MC Etcher.
  • 120 degree tip: Provides slightly wider lines in softer materials such as fibreboard but has less penetration in harder materials.
  • Reusable storage: Ships in a reusable storage tube.
  • 2D CAM toolpaths: Use Carbide Create, or any other 2D CAM program, to generate contour toolpaths and pocket toolpaths with an RPM of zero.
  • Carbide Create Pro: Use the Engrave toolpath to generate outline and fill toolpaths for drag engraving.
  • Plastics: Works with plastics like acrylic, plexiglass and polycarbonate.
  • Metals: Works with metals like aluminium, brass or stainless steel.
  • Glass and ceramics: Works with glass, porcelain and ceramics.
  • Stone tile: Works with stone tile, like granite and marble.

Specifications:

  • Tip: 120-degree tip
  • Shank: 1/4" Shank
  • Feedrate: 60 in/min
  • Plungerate: 30 in/min
  • Cut Depth / Compression: .015"
  • RPM: zero

Tool life will vary by material: softer plastics cause very little wear, while harder materials such as glass and stone can wear the bit faster. For hard materials, test the minimum toolpath density or maximum stepover that achieves the look you want.
