The mbed Shield is an application board designed for the mbed LPC1768 prototyping platform. It brings together CAN, Ethernet, USB, and four standard Grove connectors on a single board, making it easy to connect sensors, actuators, and communication interfaces to your mbed projects.

With a standard Arduino shield form factor and compatible base pins, it also works with other Arduino-compatible shields for extended functionality.

Key Features

  • Multiple Communication InterfacesCAN bus, Ethernet, and USB all on one board
  • 4 Grove Sockets – Plug-and-play connection for Grove sensors and modules
  • Arduino Shield Compatible – Standard form factor and base pins for stacking with Arduino shields
  • Designed for mbed LPC1768 – Direct compatibility with the mbed prototyping platform
  • USB Host Support – Read from USB storage devices with included firmware examples

Ideal For

  • mbed IoT and networking projects
  • CAN bus and Ethernet communication experiments
  • Rapid prototyping with Grove sensors
  • Expanding mbed capabilities with Arduino-compatible shields

Package Contents

  • 1× mbed Shield
Note: The mbed LPC1768 prototyping board is required and sold separately.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

CAN bus
CAN bus is a reliable two-wire communication network originally designed for vehicles and now common in machinery and robotics. It matters when you need multiple controllers or devices to share status and control messages in a noisy electrical environment.
Grove
Grove is a plug-in connector ecosystem for sensors and modules that avoids soldering and jumper wires. Grove compatibility matters because it can make it quicker to add supported I2C devices, as long as the cable and voltage are suitable.
IoT
Short for Internet of Things, meaning physical devices that connect to networks or the internet to send data or be controlled remotely. It matters if you want projects such as connected sensors, remote controls or classroom data-logging activities.
Shield
An add-on board that plugs into a main controller board to give it extra features such as sensing, motor control or communication. Knowing a product supports shields helps you judge whether it can connect neatly into an existing maker-board setup.
USB host
A USB host is the side of a USB connection that controls attached devices, like a computer talking to a keyboard or flash drive. This matters because most microcontroller boards are normally USB devices, so adding USB host support lets them use common USB peripherals.
