This compact USB camera module is built around the Sony IMX179 image sensor, giving embedded projects an 8MP imaging option with autofocus and a USB connection. It is designed for use with platforms such as Raspberry Pi, NVIDIA Jetson, LattePanda, RDK X5 and PCs.

The module uses the USB Video Class (UVC) protocol, so it can work as a plug-and-play camera without special drivers on supported operating systems. It supports high-resolution stills and video, including 1080p at 30 FPS, making it useful for machine vision, security cameras, document and PCB scanning, streaming rigs, kiosks and interactive installations.

Autofocus helps keep subjects sharp as the working distance changes, from close-up use through to infinity. DFRobot also references GitHub documentation for this module, and the shipping list includes the IMX179 USB 8MP Camera Module and a USB cable.

Features:

  • High-Fidelity 8MP Imaging: Powered by a 1/3.2-inch Sony IMX179 sensor for detailed 8 megapixel capture.
  • Dynamic and Responsive Autofocus: Automatically adjusts the lens for subjects from 10cm to infinity.
  • Seamless Plug-and-Play Integration: UVC compliant for driver-free operation on supported systems.
  • Embedded platform support: Works with Raspberry Pi, NVIDIA Jetson, LattePanda, RDK X5 and PCs.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

dynamic range
Dynamic range describes how wide a span of values a sensor can measure, from very low to very high. For a light sensor, a wide dynamic range means it can work in dim indoor settings as well as bright sunlight without changing hardware.
PCB
A printed circuit board is a rigid board with copper tracks that connect electronic parts without loose wires. For this kit, the PCBs also form the airplane shape, so they are both the circuit base and part of the finished model.
UVC
UVC is a short-wavelength, high-energy band of ultraviolet light often used in germicidal lamps and curing applications. A separate UVC reading matters if your project needs to monitor or verify UVC sources rather than just detect general UV light.
