The ESP-12S is a compact WiFi module based on the ESP8266 processor from Espressif. Running at 80 MHz with a full WiFi front-end (client and access point modes) and built-in TCP/IP stack with DNS support, it's designed for embedding directly into custom PCB designs.

The module features large, easy-to-solder castellated pads and comes pre-programmed with NodeMCU Lua firmware. Additional components are required for standalone operation.

Key Features

  • ESP8266 Processor – 80 MHz microcontroller with WiFi
  • 4 MB Flash – Onboard flash memory
  • WiFi – Full 802.11 b/g/n client and access point support
  • TCP/IP Stack – Built-in networking with DNS support
  • Onboard Antenna – No external antenna required
  • NodeMCU Lua Firmware – Pre-programmed and ready to use
  • SMT Module – Large castellated pads for easy hand soldering

Ideal For

  • Custom PCB designs requiring WiFi connectivity
  • IoT and home automation projects
  • Embedded wireless applications
Note: This is the bare ESP-12S SMT module for advanced users. Additional components are needed for standalone operation — refer to the HUZZAH ESP8266 schematic for recommended support circuitry.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

Flash memory
Flash memory is non-volatile memory that retains stored data even when power is removed, and can be erased and rewritten in blocks. It lets data such as firmware, settings or saved records persist across power cycles.
IoT
Short for Internet of Things, meaning physical devices that connect to networks or the internet to send data or be controlled remotely. It matters if you want projects such as connected sensors, remote controls or classroom data-logging activities.
microcontroller
A microcontroller is a small computer on a single chip that runs a stored program and controls connected inputs and outputs such as buttons, sensors, displays and communication interfaces. In a device built around one, it is the part that executes the code and coordinates the device's behaviour.
PCB
A printed circuit board (PCB) is a board, usually rigid, with etched copper tracks that connect electronic components together without loose wiring. Components are mounted on the board and signals route between them through the copper layout.
