The Crumble is an easy-to-use programmable controller. It can drive 2 motors forwards and backwards at variable speeds. It has 4 IO (Input/Output) pads which allow connections to switches, LDRs, low power LEDs and so on.
Contains:
- 1 x Crumble controller
- 10 x Croc leads
- 2 x Sparkles (controllable RGB LEDs)
- 1 x Crumble-friendly switch
- 1 x Micro USB cable
- 1 x Crumble-friendly switched battery box
The Crumble has been designed to encourage tinkering, using ‘croc leads’ for quick and simple connections. Pads allow terminal blocks to be fitted or a direct solder connection made, while the larger 4mm holes make an easy target for conductive thread and needle.
The Crumble software runs on PC, Mac and Linux (including the Raspberry Pi). Inspired by MIT Scratch, programs are simply built by snapping blocks together on screen. Sending a program to the Crumble is almost instant, allowing rapid experimentation. The Crumble can digitally control full-colour LED, called Sparkles (two are included).
Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- conductive thread
- Thread made with metal or other conductive fibres so it can carry electricity while being sewn into fabric. It matters for wearable and textile projects because it can replace wire, but it has more resistance than normal hookup wire.
- LED
- A light-emitting diode is a small electronic component that lights up when current flows through it in the correct direction. In this kit, LEDs create the flashing effect, so polarity and correct soldering matter for the project to work.
