This tactile mechanical switch is suited to custom keyboards, keyboard repairs and embedded human-machine interfaces where you want clear physical feedback without the extra sound of a clicky switch. The Brown-style feel provides a noticeable tactile bump while remaining non-clicking.

The MX2A generation refines the original Cherry MX design with factory-applied premium lubrication, an optimised spring and updated housing geometry. These changes are intended to make key travel smoother, reduce spring noise and improve typing feel while keeping compatibility with standard MX keycaps and PCBs.

The housing includes a built-in recess for a standard 3mm LED, making it easier to add illumination under a key cap. For prototyping or simple wiring, it can be paired with a matching Cherry MX switch breakout board.

Supplier documentation is available for the MX2A-G1NW datasheet, a Cherry MX switch breakout guide and button/switch basics.

Features:

  • MX2A tactile mechanical keyswitch: Designed for custom and replacement keyboards and embedded human-machine interfaces.
  • Non-clicking tactile feedback: Provides a tactile bump without an audible click.
  • 2.0mm actuation point: Actuates part-way through the key travel.
  • 4.0mm total travel: Full key travel distance.
  • Factory-lubricated: Factory-lubricated for smoother operation.
  • Gold crosspoint contacts: Uses gold crosspoint contacts.
  • Rated lifespan: Rated for more than 100 million actuations.
  • Mount compatibility: Plate and PCB mount compatible.
  • Keycap compatibility: Compatible with standard Cherry MX keycaps.
  • Upper Housing: CAD-engineered with sub-0.01mm tolerances to ensure precise switching-slide guidance.
  • Tactile Switching Slide/Stem: Engineered to control pre-travel and keystroke feel, featuring a bulged TLS surface that delivers noticeable tactile feedback to communicate the exact point of actuation.
  • Gold Crosspoint Contact: Self-cleaning, gold-plated triangular cross-contacts meet at precise right angles to provide permanent corrosion protection.
  • Precision Coil Spring: The high-density molecular structure of the spring’s metal alloy is individually calculated and optimised to provide consistent pressure resistance for the switch's specific actuation force.
  • Dual-Functional Housing Base: Engineered from a plastic polymer/glass-fibre blend to serve as both the internal mount for the switching mechanism and the external mounting surface for the keyboard.
  • LED recess: Built-in recess accommodates a standard 3mm LED.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

breakout
A breakout board carries a small or fine-pitched component and brings its connections out to standard, breadboard- and header-friendly pins. Describing a part as a breakout means it can be wired into a project without soldering directly to the component's tiny contacts.
LED
A light-emitting diode (LED) is a small electronic component that emits light when current flows through it in the correct direction. Because it only conducts one way, its polarity matters, and a through-hole LED must be soldered the correct way around to light up.
PCB
A printed circuit board (PCB) is a board, usually rigid, with etched copper tracks that connect electronic components together without loose wiring. Components are mounted on the board and signals route between them through the copper layout.
Tolerance
Tolerance tells you how far the real resistance value may be from the printed value. A 1% resistor is useful when a circuit needs more predictable behaviour than a looser 5% or 10% part.
