This blue MX2A switch gives custom keyboards, replacement builds and embedded human-machine interfaces the classic Cherry clicky feel. It has a tactile bump and a distinct audible click at the actuation point, so each keypress provides clear physical and sound feedback.
The MX2A generation refines the original MX design with factory-applied lubrication, an optimised spring and improved housing geometry for smoother key travel, reduced spring noise and a better typing feel. It remains compatible with standard MX keycaps and PCBs.
The housing includes a built-in recess for a standard 3mm LED, making it suitable for under-key illumination. For prototyping or simple wiring, pair it with a compatible Cherry MX switch breakout board.
Features:
- MX2A clicky mechanical keyswitch
- Tactile bump with audible click
- Factory-lubricated for smoother operation
- Gold crosspoint contacts
- Plate and PCB mount compatible
- Compatible with standard Cherry MX keycaps
- Upper Housing: CAD-engineered with sub-0.01mm tolerances to ensure precise switching-slide guidance.
- Two-Part Switching Slide/Stem: This specialised two-part construction features a bulged TLS surface to deliver a distinct audible click sound with tactile feedback at the exact point of actuation.
- Gold Crosspoint Contact: Self-cleaning, gold-plated triangular cross-contacts meet at precise right angles to provide permanent corrosion protection.
- Precision Coil Spring: The high-density molecular structure of the spring’s metal alloy is individually calculated and optimised to provide consistent pressure resistance for the switch's specific actuation force.
- Dual-Functional Housing Base: Engineered from a plastic polymer/glass-fibre blend to serve as both the internal mount for the switching mechanism and the external mounting surface for the keyboard.
- Built-in recess accommodates a standard 3mm LED
Specifications:
- Actuation point: 2.2mm
- Total travel: 4.0mm
- Actuation life: Rated for more than 100 million actuations
- Upper housing tolerance: sub-0.01mm tolerances
A useful switch for keyboard projects, repairs and physical control panels where audible, tactile feedback is preferred.
Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- breakout
- A breakout board carries a small or fine-pitched component and brings its connections out to standard, breadboard- and header-friendly pins. Describing a part as a breakout means it can be wired into a project without soldering directly to the component's tiny contacts.
- LED
- A light-emitting diode (LED) is a small electronic component that emits light when current flows through it in the correct direction. Because it only conducts one way, its polarity matters, and a through-hole LED must be soldered the correct way around to light up.
- PCB
- A printed circuit board (PCB) is a board, usually rigid, with etched copper tracks that connect electronic components together without loose wiring. Components are mounted on the board and signals route between them through the copper layout.
- Tolerance
- Tolerance tells you how far the real resistance value may be from the printed value. A 1% resistor is useful when a circuit needs more predictable behaviour than a looser 5% or 10% part.
