This decorative bulb strand gives you the café-light look for patios, fences, displays and event installations, with individually addressable RGBW control in every bulb. Each bulb contains a triple RGBW LED, so you can create rainbows, animated colour effects, or warm-white ambience from the same strand.
The strand is designed for 12V operation and TM1814 control, not standard NeoPixel/WS2812 control. TM1814 uses a different, inverted signal and needs constant data refresh, so choose a compatible controller or driver such as one that supports TM1814. If your controller does not provide an inverted output, an external inverter such as an Adafruit Pixel Shifter may be required.
Each strand includes 20 bulbs spaced along the cable, with small hooks for attaching them to a wire, fence or similar support. There are 'weatherproof' 3-pin DC connectors on both ends for longer runs, plus an input-side pigtail for wiring power, data and ground.
Specifications:
- Number of bulbs: 20
- LED per bulb: triple RGBW LED inside
- Controller protocol: TM1814
- Power supply voltage: 12VDC
- Internal LED arrangement: three LEDs in series
- Maximum current per bulb: 60mA maximum with all the LEDs on bright white
- Recommended power supply: 12V 1A or 12V 5A power supply
- USB-C PD power option: USB Type C PD supply that can provide 12V
- USB-C PD accessories: 12V PD Cable or 12V PD power tip
- Driver requirement: TM1814 driver
- NeoPixel/WS2812 compatibility: not the same as NeoPixel/WS2812
- Signal type: inverted signal from classic NeoPixels
- Refresh requirement: requires constant data refresh
- WLED note: many drivers like WLED do support TM1814 but you may need a logic inverter
- No-signal behaviour: will flash solid colours if no signal is provided
- Bulb spacing: 8"
- Mounting: little hooks that can be used to attach them to a wire or fence
- Connectors: 'weatherproof' 3-pin DC connectors on both ends
- Included pigtail: one 'pigtail' for the input side
- Brown wire: +12V
- White wire: data
- Blue wire: ground
If you do not need the fourth white channel, the RGB NeoPixel version may be easier to drive.
Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- DC
- DC means direct current, where electricity flows in one constant direction, as supplied by batteries, USB ports and many plug-pack power supplies. When a product specifies DC, it runs from a DC supply rather than mains AC, so you need to provide the correct voltage and polarity.
- LED
- A light-emitting diode (LED) is a small electronic component that emits light when current flows through it in the correct direction. Because it only conducts one way, its polarity matters, and a through-hole LED must be soldered the correct way around to light up.
- NeoPixel
- A type of addressable LED system where colour data is sent along a single digital data line from one LED or controller to the next. Compatibility matters because the timing and signal format must match for the lights or driver board to respond correctly.
- RGB
- Short for red, green and blue, the three primary colours of light that are mixed in varying amounts to make a wide range of colours. In electronics RGB can refer to an LED or pixel that blends these three colours, or to a colour signal or interface that carries separate red, green and blue channels.
- USB-C
- USB-C is a small, reversible USB connector that can carry power, data and, on some devices, video over a single cable. The same connector can range from charging only to high-speed data, so the functions a given port actually supports vary.
