A high-precision ambient light sensor housed in a transparent semisphere case for optimal light-gathering performance. With a wide 0–200 klx detection range and I2C communication, this sensor is ideal for applications requiring accurate ambient light measurement across a broad range of conditions.

The on-chip photodiode features a spectral response optimised to mimic the human eye's perception of ambient light, with built-in IR and UV blocking. An adaptive gain block automatically selects the optimal lux range to maximise accuracy at any light level.

Key Features

  • Wide Detection Range – 0 to 200 klx covers everything from moonlit nights to direct sunlight
  • Human Eye Response – Spectral response matched to human visual perception
  • IR & UV Blocking – Filters out infrared and ultraviolet for accurate visible light measurement
  • Adaptive Gain – Automatically optimises counts/lux for the current light level
  • I2C Interface – Simple digital communication with microcontrollers
  • Transparent Semisphere Housing – Enhanced light collection from all angles

Specifications

  • Supply Voltage – 2.7V to 6V
  • Operating Current – 0.7mA
  • Detection Range – 0 to 200 klx
  • Resolution – 0.054 lx
  • Interface – I2C
  • Operating Temperature – -40°C to +85°C
  • Dimensions – Inner diameter 22mm, outer diameter 26mm, shell diameter 28.5mm, semisphere height 18mm

Luminance Reference

  • Evening – 0.001–0.02 lx
  • Moonlit night – 0.02–0.3 lx
  • Cloudy indoor – 5–50 lx
  • Cloudy outdoor – 50–500 lx
  • Sunny indoor – 100–1,000 lx
  • Reading light – 50–60 lx
  • Video standard – 1,400 lx

Ideal For

  • Smart lighting and display brightness control
  • Vehicle automatic headlight systems
  • Greenhouse and agricultural light monitoring
  • Environmental data logging

Package Contents

  • 1× Ambient Light Sensor (0–200 klx)

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

Ambient light sensor
A sensor that measures the general brightness of light falling on it, similar to how a device can adjust screen brightness automatically. It matters when you want a project to react to room lighting, daylight, shadows, or covered/uncovered conditions.
I2C
I2C is a two-wire communication bus used by many sensors and small modules. It matters because several I2C devices can share the same two wires, but each device needs a compatible address and your controller must support I2C.
lux
Lux is the standard unit for measuring how much light falls on a surface, similar to how a light meter reports brightness. A sensor that outputs lux gives readings that are easier to compare between rooms, outdoor conditions, and different projects.
photodiode
A photodiode is a light-sensitive electronic component that produces a signal when light hits it. In this sensor, multiple photodiodes let the chip measure different parts of the light spectrum separately.
