This swirly aluminium mounting grid gives small maker boards a sturdy mechanical base when you are building plug-and-play projects with STEMMA QT boards, sensors, Feathers and other 0.1 inch-spaced PCBs.

It is made using a single-sided aluminium-core PCB process, but there is no copper layer — just the aluminium backing with black soldermask and silkscreen. The aluminium is electrically and thermally conductive, so take care when using metal screws unless you intentionally want the whole plate to act as a ground plane.

The grid uses a 5x5 block layout with dots, holes and slots to help line up many common 0.1 inch mounting patterns. The aluminium can also be cut, drilled, machined or bent if your project needs more customisation.

Adafruit also provides a KiCad Python script grid generator if you want to make your own grid in another size.

Specifications:

  • Plate thickness: 0.062" thick aluminum plate
  • Mounting compatibility: For 0.1" grid mounting projects
  • Dimensions: 3" x 3" dimensions
  • Grid generator: KiCad Python script grid generator available for making any size your desire
  • Product Dimensions: 75.0mm x 75.0mm x 1.5mm / 3.0" x 3.0" x 0.1"
  • Product Weight: 13.6g / 0.5oz
  • Square size: 0.6" x 0.6"
  • Hole and slot spacing: every 0.2 inches
  • Drill hole diameter: 0.1" / 2.54mm diameter
  • Slot size: 0.11" x 0.3" (2.75 x 7.5mm)
  • Block layout: 5x5 'blocks'
  • Overall size: 3" x 3" in size or about 75x75mm

A handy mounting base for prototypes, sensor clusters and compact STEMMA QT builds where a breadboard is not part of the final mechanical design.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

ground plane
A ground plane is a large area of copper on a circuit board connected to ground. It helps provide a stable return path for signals and is especially important for reducing noise in high-speed connections.
PCB
A printed circuit board is a rigid board with copper tracks that connect electronic parts without loose wires. For this kit, the PCBs also form the airplane shape, so they are both the circuit base and part of the finished model.
STEMMA
A plug-and-cable connection system used on some maker electronics boards to make wiring simpler. If a product uses STEMMA, you need the matching cable or connector type to plug it in without soldering.
STEMMA QT
A small plug-in connector system for I2C boards that lets you connect compatible sensors and controllers without soldering. It matters because it can make wiring faster and less error-prone, especially when adding several small modules to a project.
