The Adafruit RGB Matrix FeatherWing Kit for nRF52840 lets you drive HUB75-type RGB LED matrices from nRF52840-based Feather boards. With built-in power regulation and a compact form factor, it's the easiest way to create colourful scrolling displays and LED wall projects using the Feather ecosystem with Bluetooth connectivity.

The wing can be assembled in two ways: solder the 2×8 IDC header on top to connect via cable and stack on your Feather, or solder the 2×10 socket header on the bottom to plug the wing directly into the back of your matrix with the Feather stacked on top. A 5 V DC jack with polarity protection powers the matrix, and an onboard 3.3 V regulator powers the Feather — no separate USB or battery needed.

Key Features

  • nRF52840 Feather Compatible – Designed for Feather nRF52840 Express and Sense boards
  • HUB75 Matrix Support – Drives 16×32, 32×32, and 64×32 RGB LED matrices
  • Dual Assembly Options – IDC cable on top or direct plug-in on the back of the matrix
  • Onboard Power Regulation – 5 V input with polarity protection; built-in 3.3 V regulator for the Feather
  • 2.1 mm DC Jack – Standard barrel connector for 5 V power supply
  • Compact Build – No separate USB or battery required for the Feather
Important: This FeatherWing is only tested and designed to work with nRF52840 Feathers (Express and Sense). It is not compatible with SAMD21/SAMD51 (M0 or M4) Feathers — a separate version with correct wiring is available for those boards.

Ideal For

  • Bluetooth-connected LED matrix displays
  • Portable scrolling text and signage projects
  • Compact LED wall installations
  • Feather-based IoT display projects with BLE

Package Contents

  • 1× RGB Matrix FeatherWing PCB for nRF52840 (surface-mount parts pre-attached)
  • 1× 2×8 IDC shrouded header
  • 1× 2×10 female socket header
  • 1× 2.1 mm DC jack
  • 1× 5.08 mm terminal block
  • 1× Male header strip
Note: Feather board, RGB LED matrix, and 5 V power supply are sold separately. Some soldering is required for assembly. You may also want Feather stacking headers or female headers depending on how you plan to attach your Feather.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

BLE
BLE stands for Bluetooth Low Energy, a Bluetooth mode designed for lower power use and modern phone compatibility. It matters because BLE support can make the module easier to use with Apple devices and battery-powered projects, though it may behave differently from classic serial Bluetooth.
FeatherWing
A FeatherWing is an add-on board made to plug into the Feather microcontroller board layout. Knowing a product is a FeatherWing helps you check whether it will physically and electrically fit your Feather-style mainboard.
Headers
Rows of metal pins used to plug a module into a breadboard or connect it with jumper wires. Pre-soldered headers make the module easier to use straight away without needing to solder the pins yourself.
HUB75
HUB75 is a common connector and signalling standard used by many RGB LED matrix panels. If a controller supports HUB75, it can plug into compatible matrix panels without custom wiring, but you still need to match the panel size and power requirements.
IoT
Short for Internet of Things, meaning physical devices that connect to networks or the internet to send data or be controlled remotely. It matters if you want projects such as connected sensors, remote controls or classroom data-logging activities.
LED
A light-emitting diode is a small electronic component that lights up when current flows through it in the correct direction. In this kit, LEDs create the flashing effect, so polarity and correct soldering matter for the project to work.
nRF52840
The nRF52840 is a Nordic Semiconductor microcontroller commonly used in maker boards, especially where Bluetooth Low Energy is needed. Seeing it listed tells you the USB host software may support boards based on this chip.
PCB
A printed circuit board is a rigid board with copper tracks that connect electronic parts without loose wires. For this kit, the PCBs also form the airplane shape, so they are both the circuit base and part of the finished model.
RGB
Short for red, green and blue, usually referring to an LED that can mix those three colours. It matters because controlling an RGB LED teaches how separate outputs combine to create different colours.
SAMD21
The SAMD21 is a Microchip microcontroller used in many Arduino-compatible boards. It matters here because USB host library support can depend on the exact microcontroller on your mainboard.
SAMD51
A family of 32-bit microcontroller chips used to run the main program on a board. In this kit it handles the display-driving work, so it matters for performance when showing animations and graphics on an LED matrix.
Terminal block
A connector used to join wires together in a neat, removable, or serviceable way. For this product, it helps split one power input into several outputs without soldering.
