The Adafruit Radio FeatherWing RFM69HCW @ 433 MHz adds short-to-medium range packet radio to any Feather board. Based on the SX1231 transceiver, this FeatherWing provides FSK packet radio with built-in AES-128 encryption, auto-retransmit, and multipoint networking — ideal for sensor networks, remote control, and wireless data links.

With +13 to +20 dBm transmit power (up to 100 mW), the RFM69HCW can reach approximately 500 m line of sight with a simple wire antenna, and potentially up to 5 km with directional antennas and optimised settings. Pair it with a Wi-Fi, cellular, or Bluetooth Feather to bridge 433 MHz radio to the internet.

Key Features

  • SX1231 FSK Packet Radio – FSK/GFSK/MSK/GMSK/OOK modulation at 433 MHz
  • +13 to +20 dBm Transmit Power – Up to 100 mW, selectable in software
  • ~500 m Range – Line of sight with wire antenna; up to 5 km with directional antennas
  • AES-128 Encryption – Built-in hardware encryption engine
  • Auto-Retransmit – Automatic packet retransmission for reliability
  • Multipoint Networking – Individual node addresses for creating networks
  • SPI Interface – Connects to Feather via SPI bus
  • 50–150 mA TX Current – 50 mA at +13 dBm, 150 mA at +20 dBm
  • Arduino Libraries – Ready-to-go with tested support

Ideal For

  • Wireless sensor networks
  • Remote control and telemetry
  • Bridging 433 MHz radio to internet via Wi-Fi/cellular Feathers
  • Encrypted point-to-point or multipoint data links
Note: Radios can only communicate with other radios of the same type and frequency — RFM69 433 MHz talks only to RFM69 433 MHz. Some soldering is required to attach headers and a wire antenna (or optional uFL/SMA connector). Check your local regulations for 433 MHz ISM band usage.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

FeatherWing
A FeatherWing is an add-on board made to plug into the Feather microcontroller board layout. Knowing a product is a FeatherWing helps you check whether it will physically and electrically fit your Feather-style mainboard.
Headers
Rows of metal pins used to plug a module into a breadboard or connect it with jumper wires. Pre-soldered headers make the module easier to use straight away without needing to solder the pins yourself.
SMA
A threaded coaxial connector commonly used for antennas. It matters because you need antennas with matching SMA connectors, or suitable adapters, for the LTE and GNSS antenna ports.
SPI
A fast serial communication bus often used for displays, memory cards, and sensors. It matters because SPI devices need specific pins for clock and data, plus a separate chip-select line for each device.
