The Adafruit Push-button Power Switch Breakout lets you toggle DC power on and off with a simple button press. A latching analogue circuit uses a 3A P-FET to connect or disconnect the input to the output — press once to turn on, press again to turn off. It works with 3–14V DC at up to 3A, with only 0.5 µA quiescent current when off.
A KILL pin allows your project to programmatically turn itself off — apply 1V or more to instantly disconnect the FET and keep power off even if the button is pressed. An on-board red LED indicates when the output is active.
Key Features
- Latching Push-Button Control – Press once for on, press again for off; built-in debouncing
- 3A P-FET Switch – Handles up to 3A continuous (FET may warm at max current)
- 3–14V DC Range – Works with a wide range of DC power sources
- 0.5 µA Quiescent Current – Ultra-low standby draw when off
- KILL Pin – Apply 1V+ to programmatically turn off the load and keep it off
- Active LED Indicator – Red LED lights up when output is on
- Breadboard Friendly – 0.1" header and four mounting holes
- Replaceable Button – Includes a 12 mm tactile switch; solder in your own if preferred
Important Considerations
- DC voltages only (3–14V) — not for AC mains switching
- No air-gap isolation (solid-state FET, not mechanical)
- Body diode in the FET allows reverse current if the load voltage exceeds the input
- Very bouncy switches may cause rapid on/off toggling instead of clean latching
Ideal For
- Battery-powered project power control
- Self-shutdown capability for microcontroller projects (via KILL pin)
- Clean on/off switching for portable electronics
- Replacing toggle switches with a momentary push button
Package Contents
- 1× Adafruit Push-button Power Switch Breakout (assembled and tested)

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- breakout
- A breakout board carries a small or fine-pitched component and brings its connections out to standard, breadboard- and header-friendly pins. Describing a part as a breakout means it can be wired into a project without soldering directly to the component's tiny contacts.
- DC
- DC means direct current, where electricity flows in one constant direction, as supplied by batteries, USB ports and many plug-pack power supplies. When a product specifies DC, it runs from a DC supply rather than mains AC, so you need to provide the correct voltage and polarity.
- LED
- A light-emitting diode (LED) is a small electronic component that emits light when current flows through it in the correct direction. Because it only conducts one way, its polarity matters, and a through-hole LED must be soldered the correct way around to light up.
- microcontroller
- A microcontroller is a small computer on a single chip that runs a stored program and controls connected inputs and outputs such as buttons, sensors, displays and communication interfaces. In a device built around one, it is the part that executes the code and coordinates the device's behaviour.
