Need to add little dots of colour to a costume, wearable, or structure? The Adafruit NeoPixel Slim LED Dot Strand uses soft plastic cords of plated wire instead of a rigid PCB, making it easy to embed, sew over, or cast into any project. Each tiny NeoPixel dot is spaced every ~50 mm (~2″) along a 1-metre strand.

Unlike traditional NeoPixel strips that can crack when bent too far, these flexible strands move freely and conform to curves. The wires are PVC-coated and the LEDs are sealed with epoxy dots for light weather resistance. Also see the NeoPixel LED Dots Strand for the original thicker-wire version.

Key Features

  • 20 RGB NeoPixels – Individually addressable LEDs at ~50 mm (~2″) pitch along a 1-metre strand
  • Slim, Flexible Wires – Soft plastic plated-wire cords that are easy to sew, embed, or cast
  • Connectors Pre-Attached – Ready to connect; can also be carefully soldered to the flexible wires
  • Cuttable – Trim to any length with standard wire cutters
  • Chainable – Connect multiple strands together for longer runs
  • Semi-Weatherproof – PVC-coated wires and epoxy-sealed LEDs for temporary outdoor use

Wiring

There are no power/data markings on the strand (no PCB). Identify wires by colour through the translucent coating:

  • Red wire – V+ power (5 V)
  • Middle wire – Data in
  • Last wire – Ground

Power Requirements

  • Supply voltage: 5 V DC (do not exceed 6 V or the entire strand may be damaged)
  • Maximum draw: ~60 mA per pixel (up to ~1.2 A for the full 20-LED strand at full white)
Warning: Do not use a power supply higher than 6 V DC. Overvoltage can destroy the entire strand. Use a regulated 5 V supply only.
Note: These strands are splash-resistant for temporary outdoor use but should not be washed or submerged underwater.

Ideal For

  • Wearable electronics and costumes
  • Sewable LED projects
  • Embedding in props, structures, and castings
  • Curved and irregular surface lighting
  • Decorative string lighting

Package Contents

  • 1× Adafruit NeoPixel Slim LED Dot Strand – 20 LEDs at 2″ pitch (1 m total length)

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

LED
A light-emitting diode is a small electronic component that lights up when current flows through it in the correct direction. In this kit, LEDs create the flashing effect, so polarity and correct soldering matter for the project to work.
NeoPixel
A type of addressable LED system where colour data is sent along a single digital data line from one LED or controller to the next. Compatibility matters because the timing and signal format must match for the lights or driver board to respond correctly.
PCB
A printed circuit board is a rigid board with copper tracks that connect electronic parts without loose wires. For this kit, the PCBs also form the airplane shape, so they are both the circuit base and part of the finished model.
RGB
Short for red, green and blue, usually referring to an LED that can mix those three colours. It matters because controlling an RGB LED teaches how separate outputs combine to create different colours.
