For wearable builds and sculptural lighting, this NeoPixel strand gives you lots of tiny RGB points without a flexible PCB to crack. Each coated NeoPixel sits on soft plastic-coated plated wire, so the strand can be shaped, sewn over, or embedded into costumes, props, castings and other structures.
The strand includes 300 LEDs spaced every 50mm / 2 inches. The wires and LEDs have PVC and epoxy coating for some weather resistance and temporary outdoor use, but it should not be washed or dunked underwater. You can cut it with wire cutters, and the pre-attached connectors make it easier to integrate; careful soldering to the solid wires is also possible.
Wiring takes a little attention because there are no PCB markings. At the end of the strand, the wire closest to the green dot is ground, the opposite wire is power, and the centre line is data in. The green dot points in the data direction; alternatively, hold the first pixel with the dot closest to you and the input will be on the right side.
Use only a 5V DC power supply for these LEDs; more than 6V can destroy the strand. Adafruit provides a NeoPixel tutorial covering wiring, power calculations and example code, and strands can be connected together as long as your power supply can handle the current.

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- DC
- DC means direct current, where electricity flows in one constant direction, as supplied by batteries, USB ports and many plug-pack power supplies. When a product specifies DC, it runs from a DC supply rather than mains AC, so you need to provide the correct voltage and polarity.
- NeoPixel
- A type of addressable LED system where colour data is sent along a single digital data line from one LED or controller to the next. Compatibility matters because the timing and signal format must match for the lights or driver board to respond correctly.
- PCB
- A printed circuit board (PCB) is a board, usually rigid, with etched copper tracks that connect electronic components together without loose wiring. Components are mounted on the board and signals route between them through the copper layout.
- RGB
- Short for red, green and blue, the three primary colours of light that are mixed in varying amounts to make a wide range of colours. In electronics RGB can refer to an LED or pixel that blends these three colours, or to a colour signal or interface that carries separate red, green and blue channels.
