Add tiny points of addressable colour to costumes, props, wearables and embedded builds without fighting a fragile flexible PCB. This NeoPixel strand uses solid plated wire cords that hold their shape, making it easier to sew over, cast into a structure or route through a costume.

The strand has a coated NeoPixel every 50mm / 2 inches, with 200 LEDs in total. The PVC-coated wires and epoxy-covered LEDs are suitable for temporary outdoor use, but they are not designed to be washed or submerged.

Connection needs a little care because there are no PCB markings. At the end of the strand, the wire closest to the green dot is ground, the opposite wire is power, and the centre line is data in. The pointy green dot indicates data direction; if the first pixel is held with the dot closest to you, the input is on the right side.

The strand comes with connectors pre-attached, and you can also carefully solder to the solid wires or use a 3-pin JST set for a quick connection. Strands can be joined for longer runs, provided your 5V DC power supply can handle the required current; do not use more than 6V.

Specifications:

  • Connector: 3-pin JST-SM
  • LED count: 200 LEDs
  • LED pitch: 50mm / 2 inches
  • Power supply: 5V DC
  • Maximum voltage: Do not use higher than 6V
  • Wire coating: PVC coating on the wires
  • LED coating: Epoxy dots over the LEDs

Adafruit provides a NeoPixel tutorial covering wiring, power usage calculations and example code for getting the strand running in your project.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

DC
DC means direct current, where electricity flows in one constant direction, as supplied by batteries, USB ports and many plug-pack power supplies. When a product specifies DC, it runs from a DC supply rather than mains AC, so you need to provide the correct voltage and polarity.
LED
A light-emitting diode (LED) is a small electronic component that emits light when current flows through it in the correct direction. Because it only conducts one way, its polarity matters, and a through-hole LED must be soldered the correct way around to light up.
NeoPixel
A type of addressable LED system where colour data is sent along a single digital data line from one LED or controller to the next. Compatibility matters because the timing and signal format must match for the lights or driver board to respond correctly.
PCB
A printed circuit board (PCB) is a board, usually rigid, with etched copper tracks that connect electronic components together without loose wiring. Components are mounted on the board and signals route between them through the copper layout.
