Add tiny dots of colour to costumes, props, wearables and embedded builds without the stiffness of a normal flexible PCB strip. This NeoPixel strand uses solid plated wire that holds its shape, making it easier to sew over, cast into a structure, or work into soft materials.
The strand is made from soft plastic wires with a coated NeoPixel every 100mm / 4 inches, for a total of 150 LEDs. The PVC-coated wires and epoxy-covered LED dots are suitable for temporary outdoor use, but they are not intended to be washed or dunked underwater.
Connectors are pre-attached, and the strand can also be carefully soldered to via the solid wires. The wire closest to the green dot is ground, the opposite wire is power, and the centre line is data in; the point on the green dot indicates data direction. The strand can be cut with wire cutters or connected to other strands, provided your 5V supply can handle the current required.
An Adafruit tutorial is available covering NeoPixel wiring, power usage calculations and example code. Use a 5V DC power supply only; higher than 6V can destroy the entire strip.

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- DC
- DC means direct current, where electricity flows in one constant direction, as supplied by batteries, USB ports and many plug-pack power supplies. When a product specifies DC, it runs from a DC supply rather than mains AC, so you need to provide the correct voltage and polarity.
- LED
- A light-emitting diode (LED) is a small electronic component that emits light when current flows through it in the correct direction. Because it only conducts one way, its polarity matters, and a through-hole LED must be soldered the correct way around to light up.
- NeoPixel
- A type of addressable LED system where colour data is sent along a single digital data line from one LED or controller to the next. Compatibility matters because the timing and signal format must match for the lights or driver board to respond correctly.
- PCB
- A printed circuit board (PCB) is a board, usually rigid, with etched copper tracks that connect electronic components together without loose wiring. Components are mounted on the board and signals route between them through the copper layout.
