This strand puts tiny NeoPixel “pebbles” or “seeds” along solid plated wires, making it easier to add dots of colour to costumes, props, wearables and embedded structures than a flexible PCB strip that can crack when over-bent.
Each soft plastic wire strand has a coated NeoPixel every 100mm / 4 inches, for a total of 100 LEDs. The wires can be sewn over, embedded in a casting, shaped into place, or cut with wire cutters.
The strand has PVC-coated wires and epoxy dots over the LEDs, so it can handle temporary outdoor use, but it should not be washed or dunked underwater. It must be powered from a 5V DC supply, and using more than 6V can destroy the strip.
Connectors are pre-attached, or you can carefully solder to the solid wires. Adafruit provides a NeoPixel tutorial covering wiring, power calculations and example code for getting started.
Specifications:
- Connector: 3-pin JST-SM
For wiring orientation, use the green dot at the end of the strand: the nearest wire is ground, the opposite wire is power, and the centre wire is data in.
Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- NeoPixel
- A type of addressable LED system where colour data is sent along a single digital data line from one LED or controller to the next. Compatibility matters because the timing and signal format must match for the lights or driver board to respond correctly.
- PCB
- A printed circuit board is a rigid board with copper tracks that connect electronic parts without loose wires. For this kit, the PCBs also form the airplane shape, so they are both the circuit base and part of the finished model.
