The Adafruit LED Charlieplexed Matrix is a 9×16 grid of yellow LEDs arranged in a Charlieplexed configuration. Designed to pair with the IS31FL3731 LED matrix driver, this display lets you create scrolling text, animations, and visual effects with individually controllable LEDs.
This is a bare LED matrix only — no driver chip or resistors are included. You'll need a compatible IS31FL3731 breakout board to control the display. The Charlieplexed design keeps wiring simple while maximising the number of LEDs you can drive.
Key Features
- 9×16 LED Grid – 144 individually addressable yellow LEDs
- Charlieplexed Design – Efficient wiring for maximum LED density
- IS31FL3731 Compatible – Designed to work with the Adafruit 16×9 Charlieplexed PWM LED Matrix Driver
- PWM Control – Smooth brightness control on each LED via the driver
Ideal For
- Scrolling text displays and message boards
- LED animations and visual effects projects
- Wearable electronics and cosplay builds
- Status indicators and data visualisation
Package Contents
- 1× Adafruit 9×16 Charlieplexed LED Matrix – Yellow

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- breakout
- A breakout is a small circuit board that makes a tiny or hard-to-solder component easier to connect to with standard pins. It matters because this OLED module can be wired into a microcontroller project without needing to solder directly to the display’s fine contacts.
- LED
- A light-emitting diode is a small electronic component that lights up when current flows through it in the correct direction. In this kit, LEDs create the flashing effect, so polarity and correct soldering matter for the project to work.
- PWM
- Pulse Width Modulation is a way for a digital pin to simulate variable output power by switching on and off very quickly. It matters for controlling things like LED brightness, motor speed, or servo-style signals from a microcontroller pin.
