The Adafruit ESP32-S3 Feather with w.FL Antenna features the dual-core ESP32-S3 with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth LE, and native USB in the Feather form factor, plus a w.FL (MHF3/IPEX3) connector for attaching an external 2.4 GHz antenna. This makes it ideal for enclosed installations or when you need improved range from a larger dipole.

This version comes with 8 MB flash and 512 KB SRAM (no PSRAM). The dual-core 240 MHz processor with native USB means it can act as a keyboard, mouse, MIDI device, or disk drive. It includes USB-C, LiPo battery charging and monitoring, a STEMMA QT port with switchable power, and a NeoPixel.

Key Features

  • w.FL Antenna Connector – MHF3/IPEX3 connector for external 2.4 GHz antenna (not a standard u.FL)
  • ESP32-S3 Dual-Core 240 MHz Tensilica – Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE (no Bluetooth Classic)
  • Native USBHID, MIDI, mass storage, and CDC serial without an external chip
  • 8 MB Flash – Large storage for firmware and assets
  • USB-C – Power, charging, and native USB communication
  • LiPo Battery Support – JST connector with charging and battery fuel gauge monitoring
  • STEMMA QT / QwiicI2C port with independently switchable power
  • NeoPixel – Addressable RGB LED with controllable power pin
  • Low Power – ~100 µA deep sleep current
  • Feather Form Factor – Compatible with FeatherWings

Also Available

Ideal For

  • Enclosed or shielded installations requiring an external antenna
  • Long-range Wi-Fi and BLE projects
  • IoT devices requiring native USB and dual-core processing
  • CircuitPython, Arduino, and ESP-IDF development

Package Contents

  • 1× Adafruit ESP32-S3 Feather 8 MB with w.FL Antenna
Important: The antenna connector is MHF3 / IPEX3 / w.FL — this is not a standard u.FL connector. Ensure you use a compatible 2.4 GHz w.FL antenna or adapter cable. Antenna, LiPo battery, and USB cable sold separately.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

BLE
BLE stands for Bluetooth Low Energy, a Bluetooth mode designed for lower power use and modern phone compatibility. It matters because BLE support can make the module easier to use with Apple devices and battery-powered projects, though it may behave differently from classic serial Bluetooth.
CircuitPython
A beginner-friendly version of Python designed to run directly on microcontroller boards. If a product supports CircuitPython, you can often program it by copying code files onto the board rather than setting up a more complex toolchain.
deep sleep
Deep sleep is a low-power mode where the microcontroller turns off most functions while keeping just enough circuitry active to wake up later. It is important for battery-powered projects because it can greatly extend how long the device runs between charges.
ESP-IDF
ESP-IDF is Espressif’s official software development framework for ESP32-family chips. It gives more direct control over the hardware than beginner-style environments, which can help with advanced features like Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio and power management.
ESP32
ESP32 is a family of microcontroller modules with built-in wireless features such as Bluetooth and WiFi. Knowing this product uses an ESP32-based module helps explain how it provides wireless serial communication and firmware update features.
HID
Human Interface Device is a USB device class used for keyboards, mice, gamepads and similar controls. If a board supports HID over USB, it can act like an input device to a computer without needing a custom driver.
I2C
I2C is a two-wire communication bus used by many sensors and small modules. It matters because several I2C devices can share the same two wires, but each device needs a compatible address and your controller must support I2C.
IoT
Short for Internet of Things, meaning physical devices that connect to networks or the internet to send data or be controlled remotely. It matters if you want projects such as connected sensors, remote controls or classroom data-logging activities.
LED
A light-emitting diode is a small electronic component that lights up when current flows through it in the correct direction. In this kit, LEDs create the flashing effect, so polarity and correct soldering matter for the project to work.
LiPo
A lithium polymer rechargeable battery commonly used in portable electronics projects. It matters because LiPo batteries need correct charging circuitry and care, and this board includes hardware intended for that battery type.
MIDI
MIDI is a standard way for electronic instruments, controllers, and software to send musical control messages such as notes, velocity, and timing. If a board supports MIDI, it can be triggered from keyboards, drum pads, sequencers, or other music gear rather than only from buttons or code.
native USB
Native USB means the microcontroller itself handles USB communication, rather than using a separate USB-to-serial chip. This matters for programming, debugging, and projects that need the board to act directly as a USB device.
NeoPixel
A type of addressable LED system where colour data is sent along a single digital data line from one LED or controller to the next. Compatibility matters because the timing and signal format must match for the lights or driver board to respond correctly.
PCB antenna
A PCB antenna is an antenna pattern built directly into the circuit board rather than a separate metal antenna. It matters because placement, nearby metal and enclosure design can affect wireless range.
Qwiic
Qwiic is a plug-in connector system for I2C devices that uses small 4-pin cables, so you can connect compatible sensors without soldering. It matters because your controller or adapter also needs Qwiic, or you will need a cable or breakout to wire it up.
RGB
Short for red, green and blue, usually referring to an LED that can mix those three colours. It matters because controlling an RGB LED teaches how separate outputs combine to create different colours.
SRAM
Fast temporary memory used by a processor while a program is running. More SRAM helps with projects that handle larger data buffers, networking, displays, or more complex code.
STEMMA
A plug-and-cable connection system used on some maker electronics boards to make wiring simpler. If a product uses STEMMA, you need the matching cable or connector type to plug it in without soldering.
STEMMA QT
A small plug-in connector system for I2C boards that lets you connect compatible sensors and controllers without soldering. It matters because it can make wiring faster and less error-prone, especially when adding several small modules to a project.
Thread
A low-power wireless mesh networking standard designed for smart home and IoT devices. It matters because Thread devices can relay messages through each other, helping build reliable networks for sensors and controllers.
u.FL
u.FL is a tiny snap-on antenna connector often used on compact wireless boards. A board with u.FL usually needs an external antenna, which matters if the product will be inside an enclosure or needs better antenna placement.
USB-C
A modern reversible USB connector used for power and data connections. On this product it matters because it can connect directly to a computer as well as to a microcontroller project.
w.FL
A very small radio-frequency antenna connector used on compact wireless boards. It matters because you need a matching w.FL antenna or adapter before the board can use an external antenna.
Wi-Fi 6
A newer Wi-Fi standard that can improve speed, range, and efficiency compared with older Wi-Fi versions. It matters for projects that need reliable wireless networking, especially where many devices share the same network.
Zigbee
A low-power wireless standard commonly used by smart home sensors, switches, and lights. It matters if you want the board to communicate with Zigbee devices or act as part of a home automation network.
