Adafruit DotStar LED strips use 2-wire SPI instead of the single-wire protocol used by NeoPixels, allowing much faster data rates (up to 32 MHz) and a 20 KHz PWM refresh rate. This makes DotStars ideal for persistence-of-vision (POV) projects and smooth, flicker-free animations — especially at low brightness levels.

Each 5050-sized DotStar LED contains an embedded controller with 24-bit colour (8 bits per channel). LEDs act as shift registers, so you can chain as many as you need. The separate clock and data lines mean any microcontroller or SBC can drive these strips without timing-critical code.
