The Adafruit 555 PWM Output STEMMA is a fully assembled 555 timer board that generates an adjustable square-wave PWM signal — no breadboard wiring or external components needed. An onboard trimmer pot lets you tune the frequency across two selectable ranges: approximately 1.5 KHz to 25 KHz, or 1.5 Hz to 250 Hz.
The output is buffered by a 74HC1G04 inverter, capable of sourcing or sinking up to 12.5 mA — enough to drive piezos, modulate IR signals, generate audio tones, or fake a PC fan tachometer signal. Power the board from 3–12V DC; an onboard regulator caps the 555 and buffer at 5V, so the output stays at logic level regardless of input voltage.
Key Features

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- JST PH
- A small keyed plug-and-socket connector with 2 mm pin spacing, often used for low-power electronics connections. You need the correct JST PH cable, and its current rating limits how much power should be passed through it.
- microcontroller
- A microcontroller is a small computer on a chip that runs your program and controls connected inputs and outputs. For this product, it is the part that reads buttons and sensors, drives the display and speaker, and communicates over Bluetooth.
- pH
- A measure of how acidic or alkaline a liquid is, on a scale where 7 is neutral. For a water monitoring kit, pH tells you about water chemistry and whether the included probe matches the range and accuracy your project needs.
- PWM
- Pulse Width Modulation is a way for a digital pin to simulate variable output power by switching on and off very quickly. It matters for controlling things like LED brightness, motor speed, or servo-style signals from a microcontroller pin.
- STEMMA
- A plug-and-cable connection system used on some maker electronics boards to make wiring simpler. If a product uses STEMMA, you need the matching cable or connector type to plug it in without soldering.
