This adapter cable lets a Teensy 4.1 or Teensy 3.6 use its USB host capability by converting the dedicated 5-pin USB host header connection into a standard female USB Type-A port.

Once fitted, your Teensy can act as a USB host for peripherals such as keyboards, mice, MIDI controllers and USB hubs, making it useful for interactive builds, controllers and embedded USB projects.

The cable is designed to mate with a 5-pin header, which is not included, soldered to the USB host pads on the underside of the compatible Teensy board. Basic soldering is required.

This adapter is only for Teensy 4.1 and Teensy 3.6. It is not compatible with Teensy 3.5, 3.2 or 3.1, and it does not mate with Teensy 4.0 despite that board having USB host capability.

Specifications:

  • Teensy connection: 5-pin header (not included) soldered to the dedicated USB host pads
  • USB connection: Standard female USB Type-A port
  • Compatible boards: Teensy 4.1 or Teensy 3.6
  • Not compatible: Teensy 3.5, 3.2, 3.1, or Teensy 4.0
  • Overall length: approximately 8 inches (20 cm)
  • Flexible cable portion length: about 5.5 inches (14 cm)
  • Installation: Basic soldering is required

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

MIDI
MIDI is a standard way for electronic instruments, controllers, and software to send musical control messages such as notes, velocity, and timing. If a board supports MIDI, it can be triggered from keyboards, drum pads, sequencers, or other music gear rather than only from buttons or code.
USB host
A USB host is the side of a USB connection that controls attached devices, like a computer talking to a keyboard or flash drive. This matters because most microcontroller boards are normally USB devices, so adding USB host support lets them use common USB peripherals.
