Add USB serial connectivity to a microcontroller design with this compact FT230X USB bridge IC. It converts USB 2.0 to a UART interface, making it a straightforward way to provide USB communication in embedded projects.

The device is engineered with an optimised pin count for space-constrained applications, helping reduce PCB footprint and simplify board layout when adding USB connectivity.

Documentation is available in the form of a datasheet for electrical details, pin information and design guidance.

Specifications:

  • Protocol: USB
  • Function: Bridge, USB to UART
  • Interface: UART
  • Standards: USB 2.0
  • Voltage - Supply: 3.3V ~ 5V
  • Current - Supply: 8mA
  • Operating Temperature: -40°C ~ 85°C
  • Mfg #: FT230XQ-R

Suited to custom PCBs and embedded designs that need a small USB-to-serial UART interface IC.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

microcontroller
A microcontroller is a small computer on a single chip that runs a stored program and controls connected inputs and outputs such as buttons, sensors, displays and communication interfaces. In a device built around one, it is the part that executes the code and coordinates the device's behaviour.
PCB
A printed circuit board (PCB) is a board, usually rigid, with etched copper tracks that connect electronic components together without loose wiring. Components are mounted on the board and signals route between them through the copper layout.
UART
UART is a simple asynchronous serial interface that sends data over separate transmit and receive wires, usually labelled TX and RX, with both ends set to the same baud rate. It is a common way for microcontrollers and other serial devices to exchange data.
USB 2.0
USB 2.0 is a widely used wired standard for carrying both data and power between a device and a computer or other compatible host, with data rates up to 480 Mbps. It indicates the kind of port a device uses and that it should work with most modern and many older computers.
