A soft, squishy 4×4 silicone elastomer keypad with 16 buttons, each designed to fit a 3mm LED for optional backlighting. The conductive pad on the bottom of each button closes a contact underneath when pressed, providing ~3mm of silent travel with a satisfying feel.

The keypads can be tiled edge-to-edge and will align correctly on a grid. The soft silicone can also be cut down to size for custom layouts. Designed to work with the Adafruit Trellis I2C driver board for easy 16-button + 16-LED control, or with your own custom PCB using the provided EagleCAD library.

Key Features

  • 16 Buttons (4×4) – Soft silicone with conductive contact pads
  • 3mm LED Compatible – Each button cavity fits a 3mm LED for backlighting
  • Tileable – Edge-to-edge tiling with correct grid alignment
  • Cuttable – Soft silicone can be trimmed for custom sizes
  • Silent Operation – ~3mm travel, completely quiet
  • Durable – Easy to clean with mild soap and water

Specifications

  • Button Size – 10 × 10mm square, 10mm tall
  • Grid Spacing – 5mm between buttons
  • Travel – ~3mm
  • LED Compatibility – 3mm LEDs (5mm will not fit)

Ideal For

  • Custom button panels and macro pads
  • Adafruit Trellis projects
  • Backlit control interfaces
  • Musical instruments and MIDI controllers
Tip: For best backlighting results, use diffused 3mm LEDs with 300mcd or greater brightness. Blue, white, and red work particularly well.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

I2C
I2C is a two-wire communication bus used by many sensors and small modules. It matters because several I2C devices can share the same two wires, but each device needs a compatible address and your controller must support I2C.
LED
A light-emitting diode is a small electronic component that lights up when current flows through it in the correct direction. In this kit, LEDs create the flashing effect, so polarity and correct soldering matter for the project to work.
MIDI
MIDI is a standard way for electronic instruments, controllers, and software to send musical control messages such as notes, velocity, and timing. If a board supports MIDI, it can be triggered from keyboards, drum pads, sequencers, or other music gear rather than only from buttons or code.
PCB
A printed circuit board is a rigid board with copper tracks that connect electronic parts without loose wires. For this kit, the PCBs also form the airplane shape, so they are both the circuit base and part of the finished model.
