The LIDAR-Lite v3HP is a compact, high-performance optical distance measurement sensor from Garmin. Housed in a durable IPX7-rated enclosure, it delivers accurate range measurements from 5 cm to 40 m, making it an ideal solution for drones, robots, and unmanned vehicles.

Compared to the LIDAR-Lite v3, the v3HP offers faster sampling rates above 1 kHz (vs 500 Hz) and improved power efficiency with approximately 40 mA less current draw. The sensor is fully user-configurable, allowing you to adjust the balance between accuracy, operating range, and measurement time. It interfaces via I²C or PWM using the included 200 mm cable.

Key Features

  • 40 m Range – Accurate optical distance measurement from 5 cm to 40 m
  • ±2.5 cm Accuracy – At distances greater than 1 m
  • High Sample Rate – Greater than 1 kHz for fast-moving applications
  • IPX7-Rated Housing – Durable and water-resistant enclosure
  • Low Power Consumption – 65 mA idle, 85 mA acquiring
  • Dual Interface – I²C or PWM output via included 200 mm cable
  • User Configurable – Adjustable accuracy, range, and measurement time trade-offs

Specifications

  • Range – 5 cm to 40 m
  • Accuracy – ±2.5 cm (at >1 m)
  • Sample Rate – >1 kHz
  • Laser – 905 nm edge-emitting, 1.3 W single-stripe transmitter
  • Beam Divergence – 8 mrad
  • Optical Aperture – 12.5 mm
  • Operating Voltage – 5 V DC (6 V max)
  • Peak Power – 1.3 W
  • Current (Idle) – 65 mA
  • Current (Acquiring) – 85 mA
  • Interface – I²C or PWM
  • Cable Length – 200 mm (included)
Note: The LIDAR-Lite v3HP is not a drop-in replacement for the v3. The v3HP uses different command and control registers — refer to the v3HP User Manual for correct sample code and register details.
Laser Safety: Class 1 laser product classified per EN/IEC 60825-1:2014. Conforms to 21 CFR 1040 performance standards (Variance Number FDA-2016-V-2943).

Ideal For

  • Drone altitude and obstacle avoidance
  • Robotic navigation and mapping
  • Unmanned vehicle distance sensing
  • Industrial proximity measurement

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

LiDAR
A sensing method that uses laser light to measure distance and build a 3D picture of the surroundings. It matters for robotics and autonomous systems because LiDAR data can help with mapping, navigation and obstacle detection.
PWM
Pulse Width Modulation is a way for a digital pin to simulate variable output power by switching on and off very quickly. It matters for controlling things like LED brightness, motor speed, or servo-style signals from a microcontroller pin.
Torque
A twisting force that causes something to rotate, usually measured in newton-metres or kilogram-centimetres. It matters when choosing motors, servos, gears, and tools because higher torque is needed to lift heavier loads, turn larger wheels, or move mechanisms without stalling.
