The TOP106 from TOPGNSS is a certified GNSS/GPS surveying antenna for receiving L1/L2 bands from GPS, GLONASS, Galileo and BeiDou constellations. It is suited to surveying, handheld and portable GNSS work, as well as fixed antenna installations.

Inside, the antenna includes a built-in 130mm ground plane, filtering and amplification for both L1 and L2 frequencies. Its design uses six hybrid couplers for signal phasing, helping make the antenna less sensitive to manufacturing variations such as inconsistent board dielectric.

This antenna is designed for modern dual-band GNSS receivers, but can also be used with any GPS/GNSS receiver that can benefit from L1/L2 reception. Check that your receiver supports the L1 and L2 signals output by this antenna.

The TOP106 has a female TNC connector commonly found on surveying antennas and uses a standard 5/8"-11TPI surveying equipment thread. It is not directly compatible with a camera tripod without a suitable 5/8" to 1/4" tripod adapter. The antenna has National Geodetic Survey certification, with ANTEX and ANTINFO data available under SFETOP106.

Specifications:

  • Gain: ≥5dBi
  • LNA Gain: 40dB
  • Reception Frequencies: L1 and L2
  • L1: 1555 to 1615MHz
  • L2: 1198 to 1278MHz
  • Antenna Impedance: 50 Ohm
  • Overall antenna weight: 335g
  • Bare antenna element weight (including MMCX connector, with RF shield): 160g
  • Dimensions: 148 x 55mm
  • Waterproof: IP67
  • Connector: Female TNC
  • Antenna Phase Center L1: 48.0mm
  • Antenna Phase Center L2: 52.9mm
  • Antenna Phase Center Average: 50.45mm

Use a TNC male to SMA cable when connecting to many compact GNSS receiver boards, and choose a suitable surveying pole, mount or tripod adapter for installation.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

Galileo
Europe’s satellite navigation system. Galileo support can improve satellite availability and accuracy, especially when combined with GPS and other constellations.
GLONASS
Russia’s satellite navigation system. A receiver that can also use GLONASS has more satellites to choose from, which can improve positioning reliability when the sky view is partly blocked.
GNSS
GNSS stands for Global Navigation Satellite System, covering positioning systems such as GPS and similar satellite networks. It matters here because high-precision GNSS modules can output lots of serial position data that this product can send wirelessly to a computer or phone.
GPS
The US satellite navigation system used by GNSS receivers to calculate position and time. Support for GPS is important because it is widely available and often used together with other constellations for more reliable positioning.
ground plane
A ground plane is a large area of copper on a circuit board connected to ground. It helps provide a stable return path for signals and is especially important for reducing noise in high-speed connections.
IP67
An ingress protection rating meaning the enclosure is dust-tight and can survive temporary immersion in water under specified test conditions. This matters when choosing a sensor for outdoor, wet, or wash-down environments.
RF
RF means radio frequency, referring to signals used for wireless communication and other high-frequency electronics. A low-noise, stable power supply is important for RF circuits because power noise can affect signal quality and measurements.
Shield
An add-on board that plugs into a main controller board to give it extra features such as sensing, motor control or communication. Knowing a product supports shields helps you judge whether it can connect neatly into an existing maker-board setup.
SMA
A threaded coaxial connector commonly used for antennas. It matters because you need antennas with matching SMA connectors, or suitable adapters, for the LTE and GNSS antenna ports.
Thread
A low-power wireless mesh networking standard designed for smart home and IoT devices. It matters because Thread devices can relay messages through each other, helping build reliable networks for sensors and controllers.
