The ANO Directional Navigation and Scroll Wheel Rotary Encoder combines a 5-way directional button pad with a rotary scroll wheel in a single, intuitive interface element. Inspired by classic click-wheel navigation, it provides a familiar and satisfying input experience for your projects.

This product is the encoder and button wheel element only — no breakout board is included. The pin-out is non-standard, so a breakout PCB is recommended for breadboard use, though you can solder directly to the pins if preferred.

Key Features

  • 5-Way Directional Buttons – Up, down, left, right, and centre press
  • Rotary Scroll Wheel – Pulse-code rotary encoder for smooth scrolling
  • Compact Form Factor – All-in-one navigation and selection input
  • Universal Compatibility – Works with any microcontroller that can read pulse-code rotary encoders

Ideal For

  • Menu navigation interfaces
  • Media player controls
  • Custom input devices and controllers
  • Embedded systems requiring intuitive user input
Note: This is the encoder/button wheel element only. A breakout PCB is recommended for breadboard-friendly use.

Jargon buster

Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.

breakout
A breakout board carries a small or fine-pitched component and brings its connections out to standard, breadboard- and header-friendly pins. Describing a part as a breakout means it can be wired into a project without soldering directly to the component's tiny contacts.
encoder
An encoder is a sensor that converts the rotation or position of a shaft, knob or dial into electrical signals, reporting movement as incremental steps and direction, or as an absolute position. It is used to track how far something has turned, which matters for precise positioning, speed control, repeatable movement, or using a rotary knob as an input.
microcontroller
A microcontroller is a small computer on a single chip that runs a stored program and controls connected inputs and outputs such as buttons, sensors, displays and communication interfaces. In a device built around one, it is the part that executes the code and coordinates the device's behaviour.
PCB
A printed circuit board (PCB) is a board, usually rigid, with etched copper tracks that connect electronic components together without loose wiring. Components are mounted on the board and signals route between them through the copper layout.
