The Adafruit TRRS Jack Breakout Board provides easy access to all four contacts of a 3.5mm TRRS (Tip-Ring-Ring-Sleeve) audio jack — commonly used for stereo audio plus a microphone channel, as found on mobile phone headsets. It's also handy when you want to repurpose standard audio cables for low-speed data transmission with power, ground, and two data lines.
In addition to the four main contacts, the breakout includes two switched outputs that let you detect when a plug is inserted or automatically switch between a built-in speaker and headphones.
Key Features
- 4-Contact TRRS Breakout – Access to Tip, Ring 1, Ring 2, and Sleeve connections
- Two Switched Outputs – Left and right switch pins connect to their respective contacts when no jack is inserted, and float when a plug is inserted
- Insertion Detection – Use the switch pins to detect when a plug is connected, auto-switch audio output, or mute/power down when unplugged
- Sturdy Mechanical Connection – Two through-hole contacts near the jack opening for solid mounting
- Mounting Holes – For secure board attachment
- Breadboard-Friendly – Header strip included for breadboard or perfboard use

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- breakout
- A breakout board carries a small or fine-pitched component and brings its connections out to standard, breadboard- and header-friendly pins. Describing a part as a breakout means it can be wired into a project without soldering directly to the component's tiny contacts.
- through-hole
- A mounting style where the component leads pass through holes in a circuit board and are soldered on the other side. Through-hole parts are often easier to handle and solder by hand, which is useful for classroom and hobby projects.
