We Built Little Bird a New Home — and It Was Made Just for You
For more than a decade, our store ran on Shopify. It served us well, and we're grateful for it. But Little Bird has never been a normal online shop. We're part shop, part workshop, part classroom — selling to makers tinkering at the kitchen table, to STEM teachers wrangling a class of thirty, to university researchers and to businesses rolling out hundreds of Raspberry Pis.
Over the years we kept bumping into the same wall: the things we most wanted to build for you simply weren't possible on a rented platform. Code samples on a product page. A power-budget calculator next to the LED strip you're buying. A free, syllabus-aligned curriculum that drops a whole class kit into your cart. Shipping that's actually priced like the parcel that turns up at your door.
So we built our own. Little Bird now runs on a storefront we designed and own from top to bottom, purpose-built for our community. Same team, same trusted brand, same friendly faces — a completely new engine underneath.
Here's what that means for you.
Finding the right part, faster
Electronics has a vocabulary problem. You don't always know the exact product name — you know what you're trying to do. Our new search is built for that.
- Search by meaning, not just keywords. Type "low-power outdoor sensor" or "tiny board for a wearable" and you'll get genuinely relevant results, even when your words don't match the product title. Our new Ultrasearch understands intent, so "microcontroller" and "ARM board" are treated as the related ideas they are.
- Typo-friendly, stock-aware suggestions. Start typing and you'll get instant suggestions with images. We rank the best match first, but when results are a tie we quietly float in-stock items up — so you spend less time clicking through to "out of stock."
- An AI overview of your search. Ask a question like "which cable for a Pi 5?" and you'll get a short, plain-English summary of what's available and what's compatible — not just a wall of 47 products to sift through.
- Guides and projects, not just products. Search now surfaces a separate Resources tab with buying guides, tutorials, interactive calculators and project lists — so a search for "connect a sensor to Arduino" can teach you, not just sell to you.
- Smarter "you might also like." Related products are chosen by genuine similarity (and curated by our team), and the suggestions refresh in the background so the page never makes you wait.
Product pages built for people who actually build things
This is where the new platform really earns its keep. A Little Bird product page is now a mini build-guide, not just a buy button.
- Copy-paste code examples. Where it helps, product pages now carry syntax-highlighted, one-click-copy code snippets — Arduino, Python, JavaScript, Rust and more — so you can go from "add to cart" to "blinking LED" without hunting through a dozen forum threads.
- Interactive calculators, right on the page. Buying an LED? There's a resistor calculator. A NeoPixel strip? A power-budget calculator. Voltage dividers, baud-rate error, servo angles — dozens of handy little tools appear automatically on the products they're relevant to, so you can size things correctly before you check out.
- A built-in jargon buster. Technical terms in our descriptions are automatically linked to a plain-English glossary. Hover for a definition, or read the "jargon buster" card below the description. New to electronics? You're not on your own.
- AI product summaries that tell you what you'll also need. Many products now show a clear, structured summary — key specs at a glance, plus an honest "you'll need this too" list (the cable, the power supply, the battery) so you don't get a parcel and discover you're missing the one part that makes it work.
- Datasheets and documents that stay put. Datasheets, schematics and guides live right on the product page as proper downloads with PDF previews — not buried in a description or linked off to a dead page.
- Stock you can actually trust. Instead of a blunt "in stock / out of stock," you'll see the real picture: in stock now, only a few left, or available from our supplier with an estimated lead time. Pair that with an estimated delivery date that updates as you pick your shipping method.
- Tell me when it's back. If something's out of stock, pop in your email and we'll let you know the moment it returns — no third-party app, no fuss.
- Kits you can configure. Choose the exact variant you want for each part of a starter kit, and watch the page show you how much you save versus buying the bits separately.
And the whole thing works beautifully in dark mode, with high-contrast, colour-blind-friendly status labels — handy whether you're on a phone in a workshop or projecting onto a classroom wall.
A free curriculum platform for teachers — something a shop simply can't do
A huge part of Little Bird's heart is education, and this is the part we're proudest of. Our new platform isn't just a store with an "education" tag — it has a real curriculum system baked in.
- Free, standards-aligned STEM units. Complete units built around design thinking and Arduino/MicroPython, mapped to the Australian Curriculum (v9.0 Digital Technologies) and NSW Technology outcomes. Filter by stage and syllabus, and see exactly which outcomes each unit, lesson and activity covers — no more cross-checking compliance across five different vendors.
- One click from lesson to class kit. Every unit has a Bill of Materials. Download it as a CSV for a quote or purchase order, or add the whole class kit to your cart in one click — with quantities automatically scaled per student or per class of 30.
- Teacher, student and presenter modes. The same lesson gives teachers a prep view (demo scripts, common misconceptions, assessment evidence, safety notes), gives students their own project view, and gives you a full-screen, projector-ready slideshow with speaker notes for the front of the room.
- Share code like a Gist. Lesson code lives at its own shareable link with syntax highlighting — students can view it, download it as an
.inoor.pyfile, or embed it elsewhere. - Print a folio. Need a take-home pack? Print a whole unit — brief, lessons, activities and assessment — as a clean PDF.
None of this is possible on a generic shopping platform, because a shopping platform has no idea what a "learning outcome" or a "stage 5 syllabus" is. Ours does.
Checkout, shipping and payment that respect your money
- Shipping priced like the actual parcel. Our new system packs your order into the fewest, right-sized boxes and fetches live rates from Australia Post (and same-day/next-day couriers for Sydney metro). Order a dozen small items and they ship in one sensible box — not twelve — which means you're not paying a base charge twelve times over.
- Honest split shipments. If part of your order is in stock and part is on the way from our supplier, we can ship the in-stock items now and the rest when they land — with a clear breakdown of when each piece arrives. It's one charge to your card, never two, so your statement stays tidy.
- You're charged when it ships. For backorders and larger orders, we place a hold and only capture payment when your goods are actually on their way — so you're never charged for something that's still sitting on a boat.
- Purchase orders and Net-30 for schools and institutions. Schools, universities and government buyers can check out with a PO number on Net-30 terms — no credit card required — and we handle the invoicing behind the scenes.
- Saved cards for return visits. Opt in to securely save your card once, then breeze through checkout next time.
- Modern, secure payments with proper fraud protection, powered by Stripe.
Staying in the loop — without chasing us
- Order status pages you can actually share. Track your order on a clear status page — and because it works from a secure link without a login, you can forward it straight to your freight company, your accounts team or your school's office. It shows real fulfilment progress and per-item lead times.
- Emails for every moment that matters. Order confirmations, shipping updates, payment receipts, returns, refunds, back-in-stock alerts — all branded, all timely, and all tracked so our team can confirm an email actually reached you if you ever ask.
- An AI assistant that knows our catalogue. Ask the on-site assistant to compare two boards, check what's in stock, or find the right accessory — it's wired into our live inventory and can even help you build your cart.
- A genuinely helpful help centre. Dozens of searchable articles covering orders, shipping, invoices, quotes, returns and education/government accounts, with smart suggestions when you describe a problem in your own words.
- And real humans, always. Behind every clever feature is a small Australian team that picks up the phone. When you reach our support crew, they see the exact same page you do — no "can you read me your order number again" runaround.
Faster, tougher, and easier to find on Google
- Pages that feel instant. Images load from a global content network in milliseconds, and pages render the important bits first while the extras fill in as you scroll.
- An app-like experience. The same site powers native iOS and Android app experiences, so it feels at home on your phone.
- Old links never die. Moved a product? Renamed one? Old links automatically forward to the right place, so the tutorial you bookmarked in 2019 still works. And if a product is discontinued, its page now shows you current alternatives instead of a dead "404."
- Easier to discover. Rich, structured data means our products show up properly in Google with prices, ratings and availability — so you find what you need faster, wherever you start your search.
Built for businesses, schools and serious buyers
If you buy at scale, the new platform was designed with you in mind:
- Quotes, done properly. Request a bulk quote, get it as a tidy PDF for your procurement team, and convert it to an order in one click when you're ready.
- Education pricing and curriculum codes. Education kits are a first-class thing here — filterable, with curriculum alignment and ex-GST pricing for schools.
- Order by API — or by AI. For teams that automate, we offer a proper API and even a modern MCP endpoint, so your own systems (or your own AI agents) can search products, check stock and place reorders programmatically.
- Organisation accounts. Link multiple people to one organisation, with API tokens and webhooks, so your team can buy without sharing a single login.
The biggest benefit is the one you can't see
Here's the quiet truth behind every feature above: we own this platform now.
That means when you tell us something's clunky, we can fix it that week — not wait for a third party to maybe build it someday. Every improvement, every calculator, every curriculum unit, every shipping tweak is ours to ship. The roadmap belongs to our community, not to a feature backlog we don't control.
We didn't move off Shopify to save ourselves trouble — honestly, building this was a lot of trouble. We did it so that Little Bird could keep being the kind of shop we always wanted it to be: one that helps you learn, helps you build, and treats you like a maker, not a transaction.
Have a look around the new site. Run a calculator. Try Ultrasearch. Browse a curriculum unit. And if something could be better, tell us — because for the first time, we can actually do something about it.
Happy building. 🐦
