SparkFun Bluetooth Mate Silver

SparkFun Bluetooth Mate Silver

Discontinued

The SparkFun Bluetooth Mate Silver is a Bluetooth Classic serial modem based on the Roving Networks RN-42 module. It acts as a wireless serial (RX/TX) pipe, replacing a physical serial cable with a Bluetooth link at baud rates from 2,400 to 115,200 bps. The pin layout matches the FTDI Basic footprint, allowing it to plug directly into an Arduino Pro, Pro Mini, or LilyPad Mainboard.

The RN-42 module is optimised for short-range, battery-powered applications, drawing only 26 µA in sleep mode while remaining discoverable and connectable. Onboard voltage regulators accept 3.3–6 V DC input, and level shifting ensures the RX/TX pins are 3–6 V tolerant.

Key Features

  • Bluetooth Classic Serial – Transparent RX/TX serial pipe, 2,400–115,200 bps
  • RN-42 Module – Short-range, low-power Bluetooth with 26 µA sleep current
  • FTDI-Compatible Pinout – Plugs directly into Arduino Pro, Pro Mini, or LilyPad
  • Onboard Voltage Regulators – 3.3–6 V DC input
  • Level-Shifted I/O – 3–6 V tolerant RX and TX pins
  • Configurable Power Modes – Dial in the lowest power profile for your application

Specifications

  • Bluetooth Module – Roving Networks RN-42
  • Bluetooth Version – Classic (SPP)
  • Baud Rate – 2,400–115,200 bps
  • Supply Voltage – 3.3–6 V DC
  • Sleep Current – 26 µA
  • I/O Voltage – 3–6 V tolerant

Ideal For

  • Wireless serial communication with Arduino Pro and LilyPad boards
  • Battery-powered Bluetooth data logging
  • Replacing wired serial connections in prototypes
Warning: Do not connect this device directly to an RS-232 serial port. An RS-232 to TTL converter is required for direct computer connection.
Note: The hardware reset pin of the RN-42 is broken out on the bottom of the board. It is labelled "PIO6" but is actually PIO4. To reset, pull this pin high on power-up, then toggle it three times. A 6-pin right-angle female header (sold separately) is recommended for connecting to an Arduino Pro. The TX/RX pins are swapped relative to an FTDI Basic — you cannot plug them together directly without swapping TX and RX.
