The Arduino DMX Shield is a low-cost, high-quality interface that connects your Arduino to DMX512 lighting networks. Built around the MAX485 transceiver and equipped with NEUTRIK XLR 3-pin connectors (one male, one female), it can operate as a DMX Master, Slave, or RDM transponder. Each shield receives a unique RDM device ID for worldwide identification.
Configurable onboard jumpers let you select TX/RX pins, choose between hardware slave mode and software-controlled master/slave (required for RDM), and enable/disable the shield without disconnecting it — handy for uploading new sketches.
Key Features

Jargon buster
Plain-language definitions for the technical terms used above.
- Shield
- An add-on board that plugs into a main controller board to give it extra features such as sensing, motor control or communication. Knowing a product supports shields helps you judge whether it can connect neatly into an existing maker-board setup.
- TX/RX pins
- TX and RX are the transmit and receive pins used for serial communication between electronic devices. They matter when wiring the board to another controller because TX usually connects to the other device’s RX, and the voltage level must be compatible.
